Get real! A song does NOT have to be traditional for Best Traditional R&B Performance consideration (see “Love on Top,” “Plastic Off the Sofa,” “Wonder What She Thinks of Me” among others).

Traditional Pop?

ReplyCopy URLMarch 31, 2023 at 9:55 am #1205370411yeah, progressive r&b should be pretty easy for chloe to get in to based on the lack of competition
ReplyCopy URLMarch 31, 2023 at 10:41 am #1205370448Chlöe can easily miss sadly. If Summer can’t get in with two successful albums that should’ve been locks I don’t put it past R&B voters to snub her. She and her sister got in under a panel. Haven’t gotten nominated since.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 31, 2023 at 11:39 am #1205370610Honey, the nominees in Best Progressive R&B Album are getting more and more obscure. Chloe may NOT get in. A bunch of nobodies will probably get in over her.

Wouldn’t compare it to Summer. She just isn’t liked

I’ll give my thoughts in another post but I have to agree, this was such a mixed bag. :/

Chlöe was nominated two times in this category and she is so high in the ballot.

Now, I love Chloe but after a couple of listens this album underwhelmed me. Most of the songs are so short with a total runtime under 40 minutes. The production is safe and in need of some “Ungodly Hour” experimentation. In fact, a lot of the songs feel safe and derivative in terms of production and songwriting. Sometimes the production and vocal layering is overdone and too excessive, which I’ve noticed with her solo music. I’ve always known her to be a great vocalist. But, some of her vocal inflections on songs such as Cheatback though.. particularly in verse 2, not a fan when she does that, but others will or don’t care. Anyway, love my girl but who knows maybe it’ll grow on me.

Beef: Series, Yeun, WongMarch 31, 2023 at 6:43 pm #1205373046We don’t know if Chloe is liked either. Sure, she got into the R&B field with her sister, but that was with her sister… under a panel. Two different types of situations… I do know that her music and image have been met with lukewarm responses.
I also find Chloe to be underwhelming as a solo artist. The production and songwriting are uninteresting and despite her being a great singer, I don’t find her type of singing appealing. I can see her getting a throwaway nomination in Progressive R&B, but there are so many better contenders out there now.

And that’s the problem. This is why the panels are needed. Traditional R&B Performance is a category meant for legendary R&B vocalists who would otherwise be overlooked. Their tracks are nostalgic, soulful, and evoke music of a bygone era. Past nominees like PJ Morton, Fantasia, Ledisi, and Anthony Hamilton deserved their nods and wins here. Recent nominees like Chloe x Halle, Lizzo, and Ella Mai did not due to their contemporary R&B songs. Voters are lazy when it comes to this category. They shove anybody here, as is evident by some of the nominees the past five years.
ReplyCopy URLApril 1, 2023 at 6:00 am #1205373289Right now, I’d put In Pieces in my Progressive R&B Album predictions. But that’ll probably change when we get to August and more artists release.
Janelle Monaé’s album is coming and I can see it in Progressive R&B, at least based on the lead single, ‘Float’.
Summer Walker is also dropping an EP soon and has teased that it’s going to be the follow-up to her acoustic Clear EP. But to be honest, I don’t even know if it’s worth mentioning because if they snubbed her for Still Over It, they’ll probably do the same again!
Victoria Monét & Lucky Daye’s new single ‘Smoke’ is great, I wonder if it has a chance at a nomination? Lucky Daye seems to be a favorite with the Academy. Would love to see Victoria in BNA as she’s dropping a new project soon, and her writing credits for other artists put her in a Muni Long type situation. However, I feel like the R&B BNA slot is going to Coco Jones this year. I would love to see multiple R&B artists get in though. It happened in 2019 with the likes of Jorja Smith and Chloe x Halle, so I’m hopeful it could happen again. FLO also should hopefully get in.
