It’s funny how most people on here thought Ed Sheeran was a lock to win this category. Fun times. lol
In another year, he would be. But I said it weeks ago that I didn’t feel a song so generic like SOY would ROTY or SOTY. I was right after all. It’d probably win EASILY, but the BRP made sure it wouldn’t happen.November 28, 2017 at 11:33 am #1202423431
Despacito remix will win this and DG like Uptown funk years ago. They are very similar, in charts, sales, nominations…November 28, 2017 at 11:42 am #1202423438
Despacito ends up being a political anti-Trump vote. Who knew!November 28, 2017 at 11:53 am #1202423444
I’m still in shock. I’m not a fan of Ed Sheeran but weren’t all of us sure about his ROTY nomination?
Its deserving to win this category is another issue and I don’t think it does but getting nominated was deserved. 12 weeks #1 on BB100, 24 weeks #1 on Adult Contemporary. People won’t like this. I’m sure there are most people that waited for its getting nominated at least.
If this award goes to Despacito, I don’t know what to say. I hope at least they will award Kendrick.November 28, 2017 at 11:58 am #1202423446
‘Despacito’ will win. It represents latin people so it fits very well on this year narrative.November 28, 2017 at 12:35 pm #1202423523
Its honestly a fight between Redbone and Despacito. If Despacito doesnt win ROTY it will win SOTY. Or worse, both.November 28, 2017 at 5:04 pm #1202423906
This feels like the place to award “Despacito” for something major. Can’t deny the impact this song has had in popular culture, chart success, and diversity representation. Unless it’s solely seen as a novelty nominee with voters (which I don’t quite buy since it’s also in SOTY when it doesn’t have to be), I think this song can make history next year. “Redbone” could spoil, I guess. The rap songs split their votes, unfortunately. As for “24K Magic,” it’s a poor man’s “Uptown Funk!” so hopefully voters will see no legitimate reason to award it (again).November 28, 2017 at 5:06 pm #1202423908
Yeah, I guess “Despacito” is the frontrunner. I’m gonna have faith that they break the hip hop bias and give it to Kendrick, especially since Bruno could win AOTY.November 28, 2017 at 5:29 pm #1202423929
This category is anyone’s game. We can get rid of Jay-Z. Bruno Mars just won this category two years ago and won’t win again. Childish Gambino will be rewarded in R&B. Kendrick Lamar will be runner-up. Luis Fonsi & company had a huge hit and will be rewarded for it. A spanish song winning ROTY would send a message.
SHOULD WIN: Kendrick Lamar, “HUMBLE.”
WILL WIN: Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, “Despacito”November 28, 2017 at 5:38 pm #1202423935
I hope Bieber will not be there to go on stage ngl and it’s just Luis and Daddy Yankee.November 28, 2017 at 8:46 pm #1202424078
This category is crapshoot. “Redbone” is the most ROTY-sounding song here, but in any other year it would be ignored. “Despacito” is the biggest hit here, but it’s so lightweight to win at the real Grammys. “24k Magic” is so derivative. It’s more or less “Uptown Funk,” but not nearly as successful. “Humble.” and “The Story of O.J.” will fight for their rap votes. It’s really a toss up. WILL WIN: Childish Gambino, “Redbone” SHOULD WIN: Kendrick Lamar, “Humble.” COULD WIN: “24k Magic,” “Humble.” or “Despacito”
God I LITERALLY AGREE ON ALL OF YOUR WORDS.November 28, 2017 at 9:56 pm #1202424140
I love all the nominees in this category!
Should Win: HUMBLE (Kendrick Lamar) or Redbone (Childish Gambino)
Will Win: Despacito (Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber)
Humble is the best rap record we’ve had in the longest time – sick beats, iconic lyrics, good vibe, Kendrick’s slick delivery. However, Jay-Z is gonna steal some votes from Humble here.
Redbone is also an exceptional R&B record – very different sound, good use of instrumentation and very unique falsetto singing by Childish Gambino. But I am afraid that it may not an appeal to non-urban voters.
As previous posters have mentioned, 24K Magic feels like an inferior “Uptown Funk”. I would have chosen Bruno Mars if “That’s What I Like” had been nominated instead, but I don’t see 24K Magic winning. On the other hand, Despacito has been the biggest commercial hit here and a global sensation. I think it has a strong shot at winning, though I think it is not necessarily the most deserving choice among the very strong nominees here.November 29, 2017 at 3:39 pm #1202424998
Redbone.December 2, 2017 at 2:46 am #1202427232
It would be really a shame if Redbone loses to shitty Despacito. I hope the Academy will make the right decision and give RoTY to Redbone.
