lol Grammys were not really rewarding indie artists though… like occasionally, yes, but the “weird choices” were mainly industry darlings that had no business being in the lineup. You can praise Collier like the second coming of Beethoven for what I care but just about 1m people listens to his music monthly. And he got into aoty. Haim? Black Pumas with a deluxe 2018 album? Who was exactly the inspired indie choice here? Real inspired choices, like Brittany or C&H or Rina, were excluded. So, good riddance.

Agree…this year was terrible. Even Fiona Apple was left out…but if they do things normal way, Changes, Yummy all would get aoty , roty, soty noms.

I was happy last year when they gave bon iver a roty and aoty nom..now these ppl might never be nominated in main categories.

The better solution would be to fix 4 popular nominees and 4 inspired picks or something like that… because otherwise Justin Bieber will have same number of aoty nominations as Kendrick Lamar. And I personally believe aoty nom is a honor(not everyone should get it multiple times)

This is really unfair for non commercial artists. Hopefully the Aoty line up doesn’t end being almost all pop.

At this point they should just get rid of the 8 nominees line-up. The main goal of those was having more diversity, especially genre-wise, between the nominees but now this ain’t happening anyways so might as well return to the 5 nominees line-up.

I wonder if they actually compared this year’s official nominations vs. results from 1st round of voting (before committees started their job) to see if discrepancy is small enough to state that the committees have outlived their usefulness… and no Bennett’s MTV Unplugged or The 3 Tenors in Concert 1994 would happen again in AOY…

I am quite worried about my favorite genre categories that benefitted the most from committees, like dance, rock, r&b, country etc.
there will be no “Kaleo’ No Good, Virtual Self’s Ghost Voices, Highly Suspect’s Lydia, Hiatus Kayiote’s Nakamarra or Breathing Underwater” type of nominations?
more like “Beck’s Colors, Bieber’s Yummy, Balvin’s Un Dia, Ariana Grande’s Boyfriend or Bennet’s ‘S Wonderful” type of nominations??!!

I hope genre categories will look more like Alternative Music Album category each year, which also is committees-free 😉

p.s. when they will add Altenative Music Performance/Song category??
how about maing entry lists public??

I think they should let the committees stay, but think of a different impact on the final nominations list. maybe something like jury system at Eurovision (50/50? one nominee being jury’s pick?)…

I’m sorry but Beck’s “Colors” was a good pick. What’s deplorable is how he won Alternative Album (for a fucking pop album) over every other nominee.

I actually think the interference this year was one of the most obvious it has been in years and that’s why they have now changed it, along with the criticism led by the Weeknd. Judging by the winners this year and the nominations outside the GF, there were definitely artists blocked from the GF to make room for other acts that didn’t make the top 20 or were very low on the list. Fiona Apple, Justin Bieber (unfortunately), Harry Styles etc almost certainly made it to the top 20 but were removed by the committee and that did shift how the GF winners worked out and made a path for some to win when it would be harder for them otherwise. I think it’s both a combination of no transparency with the committee and what their process is as well as voter engagement decreasing year on year and having so much outside influence impacting how people vote. Label ties and influences, the campaign gifts, being someone’s manager’s friend etc all influence how the limited pool of voters act, maybe more so than any other award show.

It has always been 2 or max 3 albums from pop making it into aoty. This makes me wonder if say 5 pop albums make it, the winner will likely be a non pop one given the vote split among pop nominees.

“to make room for other acts that didn’t make the top 20 or were very low on the list”??
the committees used to pick nominees among the artists/records that actually made the top 20, not lower…

I agree…like critically acclaimed albums with not huge commercial success deserve a chance opposite commercially relevant acts.

I’m not saying it was a bad pick… it got nominated just becasue it was “good” (not great or amazing) and it was Beck’s song, listed high on the alphabetical list 😉

he got nominated over some of those songs that year:
Alessia Cara – I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues
Dua Lipa – New Rules [Live]
    James Bay – Us
Janelle Monae – Make Me Feel
    Kacey Musgraves – High Horse
Kelly Clarkson – I Don’t Think About You
    Sam Smith – Pray
Selena Gomez – Back To You
Shawn Mendes – In My Blood
    Taylor Swift – Delicate

I agree with other members for general field, five slots should go to Top 5 based on votes whereas remaining three slots should be committee picks.

Yeah, I think they jumped too quickly without thinking about how the committee helped bring less commercial artists to the mainstream by nominating them in the general field. It will cause R&B, Rap and Rock categories to be more reflective of what people are listening to though.
