November 15, 2022 at 6:49 pm #1205155304#1205154565 Ok, I know theres no way to fully know and this category can often throw curveballs but what are the real chances of Björk thriving this time? I see more and more people considering her for a win but afraid they just throw a boring Arcade Fire win in the end.
It’s more likely for her to get a win this time than at any other time she has been nominated, imo.
Alt category is mainly rock based. As far as I’m concerned it’s just another rock category branch, which explains Björk’s lack of wins on that one. In the past, she either split votes with other avant-garde electronic popstars or was unfavored by some well received rock branch work, in spite of any critical or commercial success she might have garnned.
This year, pretty much everyone in this category is splitting votes. Big Thief being nominated in Alt Perfomance and Wet Leg in the Eng. Album is an indicative that those two will probably split votes – and they will, be sure of that. I can see some of those votes going to YYY too, those three are pretty much the same branch and have same voter base.
That leaves us with Bjōrk and AF, the latter being nominated with a somewhat hypeless album, also sharing voters with the other nominees and facing SA accusations against their frontman.
November 15, 2022 at 6:55 pm #1205155312Also I am not surprised by FATM snub in the album category
I don’t think it was smart to change the usual pop field for an alt album submission. That category has always been an odd one out, and she always struggled with both rock and pop fields, a mixed field logically would just make her chances of a nom – win getting lower.
She should win tho

this unfortunately aged well

November 16, 2022 at 2:59 am #1205155821I’m so happy for Machine Gun Kelly. Mainstream Sellout was my guilty pleasure this year. He’s not winning anyway but at least he can be named a Grammy nominated artist.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 16, 2022 at 7:07 am #1205156083Not MGK actually getting nomination like the user predicted omg OMG hahha the entire lineup in Best Rock Album felt out of left field, I was predicting very different names across the board. Also I was NOT expecting Avril or Demi AT ALL, but both deserved a surprise nomination more than MGK lmao if theyre gonna go the mainstream route. Once again very male dominated, but Miley getting snubbed with an acclaimed album and support of rock legends, as well and Poppy in the past in this category (despite getting into Metal performance), it kind of confirms that theyre simply voting for males.

She’s been nominated in both rock and pop before though? She had no chance of a pop nomination this time around so I think switching her to alt made total sense

Yup. She never seemed to be pop enough nor rock enough for them, and I can see the label thought process by putting her on the alt category because it’s mixed, but in practice, I think that’s the most conservative out of all of the other Grammy fields. It has some of the most atrocious results I have ever seen too.
I think that DF being a Jack Antonnoff produced album could’ve settled her for some points in the pop album category and that even if didn’t effectively get a nomination, it had better chances at grabbing it there than anywhere else. Also, she submitted for pop/duo with a somewhat underwhelming song, but I thought she had better chances at rock song with Free. Given the complete mess in the nominees for that one this year, I could see her getting a spot there again, had she submitted something.
The alternative field is way more isolated anyways, specially toward acts that are read as popstars. But who knows. I’m tired of bland alt rock and folk-ish, pseudo-pos-punk generic pop getting recognized time after time in this field, so I’ll be rooting for her and Björk.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 20, 2022 at 5:58 pm #1205161837Björk is, once again, probably not winning Alt. Music Album. Then, I really hope her team submits Atopos to Best Alt. Music Performance next year.
Also, Still impressed about The Smile’s snub. Enjoyed their album way more then Arcade Fire and YYYs ones.

I honestly think she has some good odds on her side this time. I am quite sure that Big Thief and Wet Leg will share voters, as will some of the YYY voters. Arcade Fire is the big question here. I can see them splitting votes amongst those other rock bands, but I can also see them getting the trophy on lobby solely. It will depends on whether the Academy wants the Win Butler scandal to blow at them too.
But why do you think so? I also can’t picture neither Atopos nor Ovule as potential winners. Perhaps she would get a nom for being a household name and getting the alphabetical advantage on the ballots, but that’s it. I also can’t picture The Smile in there for the love of dear God unless they submitted the project like “A Light for Attracting Attention – The Smile (Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood’s new group)”.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 21, 2022 at 8:15 am #1205162601Wet Leg will win Alternative categories although i want Florence to win one of them.
Rock categories are weird, they can show respect to Ozzy or they can go with newer acts like Turnstile.

November 21, 2022 at 8:16 am #1205162603I’m trying to figure out FATM placement in the alt performance category
I thought previously that she got the nom because Björk didn’t submit anything, so she could grab those pop enthusiast voters, but on second thought, it’s odd that she didn’t get a nomination at the album category while Arcade Fire didn’t get one in the performance category.
If Arctic Monkeys had released an album in time for submission, then I believe they would have the spot AF currently upholds.
