The “secret committee” chooses the nominees of the general field based on a top 15 or 20 list, and it has been well-documented.

Why is it hard to believe someone with a Diamond album and WW #1 smash beat out someone with only one top 10 hit and an album that sold way less?

    Why is a 70s flash-in-the-pan a voting member anyway?

Is he aware that thanks to this special committe “Formation” probably ended nominated for ROTY & SOTY over bigger hits that would have been nominated thanks to the popular vote?

Is he aware that Lionel Richie’s album was the one that got the least critical acclaim between the 5 nominees?

Is he aware that Adele probably won for the same reason Lionel won over more acclaimed albums?

Lionel was the Billboard Top artist of 1984 and Adele was the Billboard top Artist of 2016…

Plus, many people felt that in a year of Prince, Bruce, Cyndi and Tina – all artists who came with critically acclaimed, edgier music – Lionel Richie won out with a mundane album.

If anything his album was “whiter” than any of the other nominees.

See, this is what I’m talking about when I say half-assed facts to prove a point.

Plus, I just have a hard time taking the opinion of a ’70s joke.

If anything, I would think this committee was put in place not because Richie is an African-American but because his album was vastly, unequivocally inferior to the other four brilliant works up for AOTY on that occasion. Also, I have no doubt it was adult contemporary-loving white voters who put that album over-the-top for the win.

Honey, no one cares. People have got to accept that Beyoncé lost AOTY. It’s not the end of the world.

This comittee needs to be restructured or disappear, because they’re damaging the voting process, I still can’t believe there are real musicians who voted for Drake or Bieber for AOTY over Radiohead or Bowie, considering how much support he got when he won everything.
They need to listen to the music instead of checking Billboard’s lists to decide the nominations. I guess it’s all about the show and ratings.

Totally agree ,no way in hell Beiber or Drake got more votes than Bowie and I bet Formation was not in the top 5-9 in ROTY or SOTY it didnt even get genre noms.

Actually, the blue-ribbon committee was formed in 1995. After Tony Bennett won AOTY for that snoozefest.

Radiohead’s Kid A was indeed nominated for AOTY in 2000, but lost to Steely Dan

This is a joke. TMZ posted a statement from the Recording Academy because obviously Victor Willis got mixed up with the nominating committee. The same committee that was probably responsible for nominating Anderson Paak. People really need to get over Beyonce’s loss.

    From TMZ:
The Recording Academy tells us it has no “secret committees,” and adds there’s plenty of info regarding the Nominations Review Committees (to which our post refers) on its website.
A spokesperson says members of the Review Committee “are not disclosed to ensure fairness and neutrality.” This prevents them from being lobbied.

    Statement to the Daily Mail:
‘The Recording Academy has always been completely upfront and transparent about the fact that we have had Nominations Review Committees since 1989, which are made up of Grammy voting members.
‘These committees have absolutely no say over the final ballot and do not determine the actual Grammy winners. The full 13,000 voting members of The Recording Academy chose the Grammy winner for Album Of The Year, as the result of a democratic, one-person, one-vote system.
‘The committees were introduced in the first place to help level the playing field and provide independent, emerging and lesser known artists with greater opportunities for inclusion.
‘The reason that the committee members’ names are not disclosed is to ensure fairness and neutrality. If their identities were made public, they could be lobbied. This is a safeguard to protect the integrity of the process.’

I don’t think it’s a black vs white issue. It’s more of a bias towards Urban music. Black artists have won several times in the General Field with the type of success Adele had with ’25’.
