I’m surprised there’s no thread on this.
There’s nothing bizarre about him missing the General Field. After all, the rulebook gives the BRP the authority to do pretty much whatever they please with these categories. We may or may not like it, but it’s well within the rules.
However, assuming that the Genre nominations are still decided by popular vote, how in the world did he get shut out of there too? Are we supposed to believe that Blinding Lights, the biggest and one of the most acclaimed hits of the year, failed to receive enough votes to get into the top 6 of Pop Solo over the likes of Yummy and Say So? This has got to be the single most nonsensical result in the history of award shows. I honestly can’t think any other example that comes close to the sheer bizarreness of this one.
So, how did this happen? It’s frankly put the credibility of the Recording Academy as an institution into question for me, but I’d still rather hear a less cynical explanation for how this went down.

Yes, but I’m more interested in what happened specifically in Pop Field. None of those threads provided that.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 16, 2021 at 7:46 pm #1204139825I like theorizing, but I’m over The Weeknd snub. I just hope he’s makes more solid music and that you enjoy his future projects.

If he got “intentionally snubbed” by the voters, fine. If something else happened that didn’t take place in accordance with the established rules, that’s whole different story that goes way beyond The Weeknd.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 16, 2021 at 7:53 pm #1204139840The thinking is that either the pop voters were especially low this year due to the pandemic, leading to a shallow field of contenders where anything could happen, or behind-the-scenes manipulations of Scooter Braun in support of his client, Justin Bieber.

March 16, 2021 at 7:54 pm #1204139844Very low voter participation
Low passion for him specifically (mixed with being bottom of the list)
Confusion over genre placement

or, the few people who voted preferred the other songs. Apart from Yummy, they ALL were better tracks.

You mean cause he starts with a “T”? So does Taylor Swift

Swift would be listed under “S”, not “T”.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 16, 2021 at 8:13 pm #1204139883After this recent edition, it’s clear that you have to be well-connected in the music industry, especially with grammy voters, if you want nominations. Some are more well-connected than others.
