Ok so most of us before last year thought Carly Rae Jepson was 1) and One Hit Wonder and 2) A Teen Bop artist. Then Emotion became one of the most critically acclaimed pop albums of the last 10 years but, she didn’t match the success of “Call Me Maybe” or even anything remotely close or get any Grammy nominations. So here’s the question “Will she ever break through commercially again with great music or will she revert back to Biebers level?
ReplyMarch 21, 2016 at 7:27 am #600261The fact the she saw no success with Emotion is absolutely absurd to me. Radio should have gobbled up all the singles she released. I have hope that she will continue to put out phenomenal pop music but I don’t think she will ever reach pop superstardom again. If she couldn’t find it with Emotion and any subsequent single off of Kiss then I doubt it will happen.

Reading some interviews with her, it sounds like she’s not interested in that anyway and wants to focus on releasing good music. I think she’ll ultimately end up being a cult favorite.

Radio now consists of a handful (that’s stretching it) of great songs/music, the rest is utter and complete crap. “Emotion” is one of the BEST albums I have listened to in a very long while and I’m still listening to it to this day. I’m loving she is working with producers/songwriters outside of the Dr. Luke/Max Martin “hitmakers”. I’m sure it gives her more control over her music and like stated above, she’s not really interested in seeing the huge success of “Call Me Maybe”. I’m glad she has come to terms with that b/c I just cannot stop gushing about this album. I’ve said it before and will say it again, Carly did what Taylor Swift failed to do.. a “throwback” late 80’s/early 90’s sound. I can’t help but tell friends it gives me a very Cathy Dennis feel and let’s face it, who doesn’t love Cathy Dennis! haha. Also I saw CRJ at HOB in Dallas last month. She is great live and the crowd was massive. Mostly mid 20-early 30’s crowd.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 21, 2016 at 11:46 am #600325I think the critical success she had with Emotion, while not commercially successful, will result in a new career direction for Carly SLAY Jepsen. Emotion was a really important album for her. It solified her fan base and her space in the pop music world. There aren’t a lot of artists like Carly. She needs to keep making indie pop music with talented writers. I for one am very glad she shyed away from the “Call Me Maybe” style of music and went it to darker, more “indie” / “throwback” territory. It suits her very well.
She (and her marketing/PR team) knows EXACTLY the type of audience who eats her music up and she will keep doing that until she doesn’t want to anymore. She’s not trying to be a Taylor or a Katy. She’s CRJ and she is a QUEEN.

Correct me if I’m wrong but is the the only Idol alumni to get a SotY nomination?
Any Idol? I just looked it up and I thought Kelly was nominated for “Stronger” but apparently she didn’t write that one.

March 22, 2016 at 8:16 am #600587Honey, no one cares about Carly Rae Jepsen. She’s a total one-hit wonder. Some artists are just not meant to be stars. And she is one of them. Her music stinks, especially “Call Me Maybe.” #Barf
The fact that you can only pinpoint “Call Me Maybe” tells me you probably don’t really know her music, especially since that one song is not at all indicative of her musical talent.
Yeah she didn’t neither did Carrie on the two of hers that was nominated.
ReplyCopy URLJune 16, 2016 at 8:59 pm #1201852092“Your Type” is #25 and rising on the Canadian Hot 100 Airplay chart right now and I just had to come here to say that I really hope that it becomes Carly Rae Jepsen’s redemption.
I see that she actually released it as a single back in August, then re-released it in November, but Canadian radio only picked it up on May. It is a more worthy successor to “Call Me Maybe” than “This Kiss” or “I Really Like You” and should be in contention for song of the summer.
In Canada, she has had top-twenty hits both before and after “Call Me Maybe”, plus that Owl City collaboration hit #1 here, but even here, there is a perception of her as a one-hit wonder because everything but “Call Me Maybe” has flopped in the States.
