even when madonna made safe music she still lost. the problem with her is that she wasn’t talented, at least in a musician point of view. mariah was sleeping with her boss. label mates were jealous. plus she rarely toured so people saw her as more of a studio creation.
I disagree that Madonna isn’t talented. She doesn’t have strong vocals but that doesn’t tell the whole story. They probably had that impression about her, though.
But she is respected since her second/third album at least, so she should have more nominations. I’d understand her losing because at the time there wasn’t a “Pop Album”, “Dance Recording” and other categories that she could’ve won. “Female Pop Vocal Performance” obviously would favour the likes of Whitney, Barbra, etc. But no nominations for Like a Prayer?
Anyway, I can understand why Madonna was so under-awarded, but Mariah, not so much. She was obviously very talented, so this “omg, she sleeps with Tommy Motolla” thing shouldn’t refrain them from giving her Grammys, specially knowing that Grammy voters are mostly men, not women.January 12, 2019 at 10:46 pm #1202731338
like a prayer wasn’t nominated because it was controversial af and the dear beloved old white guys at the academy aren’t exactly known for rewarding controversy, although quite laughable that the same year the song would’ve been in contention, paula abdul cracked the pop female lineup with straight up, like, I enjoy that song a lot but she’s a much worse singer than madonnaJanuary 12, 2019 at 11:04 pm #1202731339
Mariah’s case is different from Adele’s, I’ve been talking about how important it is to keep a low-key ‘celebrity’ profile and be very ‘likable’. It’s a thing people! you need to have at least one, Adele has and will be dominant for years to come because she has both, she’s very low-key about her celebrity and she’s arguably very likable.
Carole King, Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion(same with Adele, she’s not an in your face music artist), Norah Jones, Beck, Ed Sheeran, Lorde – all of these artists aren’t as overexposed and some would say they are musicians first, celebrity second, and that I think was Mariah and Madonna’s ‘weakness'(through no fault of their own) with Grammy voters they appear to be celebrities first, musicians second. Taylor Swift is a curious thing, she’s not low-key but she is likable and has a strong songwriting background to make her case for musician first, celebrity second.

Bjork , Kate Bush , Patti Smith ….there were alot of talented woman putting out exceptional and influential records that have been snubbed …though I feel the music industry awards are far more commercial than the cinema ones….imagine if the Oscars awarded their main categories the way the Grammys do , there would be outrage .
Among more mainstream female artists it’s hard not to go past Madonna’s like a prayer , which was critically lauded but didn’t even get an album of the year Nom.January 13, 2019 at 2:18 am #1202731415
Dolly Parton feels weirdly under-rewarded with only 8 GrammysJanuary 13, 2019 at 3:05 am #1202731436
I also think the Grammys should get a Best Pop Song category because it’s not fair for pop singers that the only way to win a song category is winning SOTY, while rap, country, r&b and all other genres can win a lot of amount of best-genre song. That’s why pop artists usually have smaller amount of Grammys+ Best Pop Solo is very competitive- almost all of them are chart-toppers and it’s way harder to win Best Pop Solo Performance than Best Country Solo or Best Rock Solo Performance.
If there was Best Pop Song category, I think the winner would be:
2010: Halo- it won Best Pop Solo Performance and was Roty nominee or I Gotta Feeling but Beyonce was on fire that night so I would go with Halo
2011: Bad Romance or Just The Way You Are
2012: Rolling in The Deep or Someone Like You- it depends on what would she submit
2013: Somebody That I Used To Know- it won ROTY and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance against SOTY winner We Are Young
2014: Get Lucky- RAM won 5 awards that night, Royals could also win but Get Lucky beat Royals in ROTY
2015: Stay With Me- Happy by Pharrell was not eligible, Stay With Me won ROTY and SOTY
2016: Thinking Out Loud or Uptown Funk- Uptown Funk beat TOL in ROTY so Uptown Funk
2017: HELLO (duh)
2018: Shape Of You would win because it was HUGE and snubbed in GF because of BRP
2019: Shallow, but Shallow is in Visual Media so I don’t think it could be here too so the winner would be The Middle
2 wins for Adele
1 for Gaga
2 for Bruno
1 for Ed
1 for Beyonce
1 for Gotye and Kimbra
1 for Sam
1 for Zedd
1 for Random Access MemoriesJanuary 13, 2019 at 6:51 am #1202731535

British and European acts have it a bit harder at the Grammy’s. Queen, Abba, Björk, Kate Bush, Led Zeppelin, …
Even Bowie got the biggest part of his wins posthumous for Blackstar.January 13, 2019 at 11:16 am #1202731756
the fact that kate bush only received 3 nominations in her career and 2 of them were for music videos is a hate crimeJanuary 14, 2019 at 11:23 am #1202733972
Mariah owned 1990s…I don’t know what Grammys had against her- she was likeable, sold a lot, crazy amount of hits, wrote her own songs, had a fantastic voice and performances…She was in 1990 what Adele is in 2010s…
The Sawyer Brown act was no different accept for the fact that they were all over the radio during the 90’s and the 80’s and still almost no award show bling. I failed to mention in my previous message (What is wrong with me?) that the lead singer also wrote a good deal of the band’s material including all three of their #1 songs: “Step That Step”, “Some Girls Do”, and “Thank God For You”.
God bless you and every member always!!!
P.S. Go here to see the lead guy and the piano player accept their 1997 ACM Group of the Year award…the lead guy literally could not speak due to his voice being almost completely gone. (wanting to put my arms around him)
Go here to check out my most favorite singer James Otto!

just found out that both janis joplin and dusty springfield have never won a grammyJanuary 15, 2019 at 10:31 am #1202735314
What hurt Mariah early in her career is that she was perceived as an artist without any real soul. Yes, people liked her voice but they also often felt her music was lifeless and without any passion. She was perceived as the queen of adult contemporary music. Nobody took her seriously as a musician; and it wasn’t “cool” to like Mariah Carey. You could rave about her vocals, but she wasn’t considered a real artist.
That image didn’t even really start to change until “Daydream” but at that point she faced too much stiff competition and in hindsight there was no way she was going to beat the people she was nominated against.
She had a real shot at winning a bunch of Grammy’s with “Emancipation of Mimi” which was viewed as an incredible comeback from someone whose career was thought to be dead just a few years before; but evidently she didn’t have what it takes to win anything in the GF that year.January 15, 2019 at 10:39 am #1202735319
Cher has to be mentioned, considering the longevity of her career it is shocking that this is her record:
1 Grammy out of only 7 nominations: even more upsetting is that after getting a nomination with Sonny in 1966 she wasn’t nominated again for her solo work until 1972 and then didn’t get a single nomination again until 2000! Not a single nomination for the rest of the 1970’s or any of the 1980’s or 1990’s!
She never won an American Music Award until 2008, and was nominated only once after that; both for an Legend Award.
She has won four out of six Billboard awards; but wasn’t even nominated for one until 1999.
She’s never won an MTV VMA and was nominated only twice.
Pretty shocking considering her career longevity and her perceived stature as an influential artist.January 15, 2019 at 8:09 pm #1202735826
I would definitely agree about Cher. I was surprised that she wasn’t nominated for Pop Female for Dark Lady, If I Could Turn Back Time, After All, and Take Me Home.January 15, 2019 at 11:05 pm #1202735937
