Ngl I wasn’t very impressed with folklore when it came out..I thought it was way too slow and mellow for my taste but it has grown on me SO much. I think its my favourite album by her now tied with 1989. I love both the albums but for completely different reasons lol so can’t compare.

I have a theory (?) about why is Mirrorball SO underrated among fans. Its always placed in folkore’s bottom 5 among fans. I think the problem is the song placement in the album.

See, at the point Mirrorball appears (track 6) you come from an increscendo of emotional ballads. While the 1 is nostalgic and chill, you get an emotion packed feeling with Cardigan, then storytelling fun of TLGAD, and then comes the gut punch that is exile. By that point, the album has established itself as an emotional, sad, nostalgic album. You get the epic back and forth of exile and then, after its over and you still have your jaw on the floor, you get My tears ricochet, arguably a MORE emotional ballad, with a bigger gutpunch, an increscendo of intensity, anger and sadness.

And after that you get a dream pop song?? No, get it out of here! I need release! Not escapism! Release!

My theory is that probably August (nostalgia, catharsis) or This is me trying (self reflecting, emotional release) would have worked so much better as a transition from emotional intense ballads to the dream sound of Mirrorball.

So, if the track order would have been

Exile-MTR-August-This is me trying-Seven- AND THEN Mirrorball, the song would have been beloved from the beggining.
