I’m pleased he put his money where his mouth is. It amplifies his statement and will hopefully bring about change. Complaining while still willingly participating feels disingenuous (though it’s completely his own decision what he does with his work).

Following through on his word means there may actually be serious efforts to reform the Grammys and introduce transparency in the nominations process.
Though unfortunately, the likelihood of the Grammys caring about two black men rejecting their platform (Ocean and The Weeknd) is slim. If any of the white men or women who won AOTY in the last decade did this there would definitely have been reforms announced ASAP.

His lack of nominations can’t even be categorized as a snub. It was a total “Fuck U” to what he accomplished as an artist last year. There is NO artist not named Taylor Swift who absolutely shaped and owned the narrative of popular music the way The Weeknd did in 2020.
I’m glad he told The Grammys to kiss his ass

If he can do it then yes I agree he’s doing the right thing and I don’t blame him for doing it.
It looks weird that Drake, Kanye, Nicki are still submitting their works after dragging the Grammys
ReplyCopy URLMarch 11, 2021 at 1:30 pm #1204109545Good for him!
This makes more of statement than just airing out grievances in a million and one interviews yet still participating in the process.
I knew artists had more of a say in the process than some let on here.

True. I wish Drake would also do this. He’s the biggest artist of the past decade and he’s one of the artists that have complained about the Grammys. But his label is still submitting him.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 11, 2021 at 1:41 pm #1204109601I hope Black artists follow suit. They have been sidelined for a whole ass decade even when deserved to win. Y’all can be like “what about HER, they love nominating her”, but literally she’s always nominated in the GF but never token seriously. Beyoncé is one of the most nominated women in history and has 1 GF Grammy. Kendrick has been nominated with critically acclaimed project after the next four times and fucked over.
