Don’t you think that “We Are Young” would win in 2013 and “Thinking Out Loud” in 2016, considering those songs went on to win SOTY? “Somebody That I Used to Know” and “Uptown Funk” weren’t even nominated, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t get into genre categories. Also, I think it may be possible that a pop song category could change results in the GF. Voters may not feel the need to reward a pop song there if they can in the genre category. But that difference might be minor.

Uprown Funk and Somebody That I Used To Know were snubbed by the panel from SOTY, in Pop caegories there is no panel to snub a song- they were clearly intentionally left out because they presented a huge threat to win- and they both won ROTY against We Are Young and Thinking Out Loud

I think it’s a good idea for a lot of reasons. 1 it takes away from the whole only pop wins SOTY ideas. Pop doesn’t have lots of opportunities to win in the major categories, so might as well expand the catagory. There are other awards maybe the Grammys should add. Like best experimental pop album to award artpop nominees.

    FYC:
AOTY: Fetch the Bolt Cutters or After Hours
ROTY & SOTY: Blinding Lights & Don’t Start Now
BNA: Megan Thee Stallion or Rina Sawayama
    Rap Album: RTJ4
    Country Album: Gaslighter
    Americana Album: Reunions
    Pop Album: SAWAYAMA
    Rock Album: The New Abnormal
    R&B Performance: Do It

Do you guys know why the Grammys has created this category? I’m pretty to know why.

From my understanding, the rules in place for the 2013 Grammys did not allow songs based on a sample of another song to be nominated to SOTY. “Somebody That I Used to Know” uses an instrumental sample from Luiz Bonfá’s “Seville” so was not eligible.

I’m under the impression that the rules have changed and “Somebody That I Used to Know” would be eligible for SOTY under the current rules.

There is a good chance that “Somebody That I Used to Know” would have been nominated and won if eligible in 2013.

In any case there are already too many categories and as we have seen in the past (and also this year with the Joanne single), if the Grammys like someone there is a good change that they vote for them in multiple categories. If we added a “Best Pop Song” award, the same people would probably end up winning more Grammys.

since pop music no longer has the kind of dominance it had in the gf I think it’s almost necessary to do that

Okay, interesting. I didn’t know that was the case. I agree that Somebody That I Used To Know would’ve had a likely chance of winning over We Are Young, in SoTY and a pop song category, but I still don’t see it for Uptown Funk.

I think this is a good idea. Songwriters deserved more credit

It would be another category to extend Katy Perry’s number of losses.

“you look like your picture, thank god.”
