New AOTY contender, anyone?September 9, 2014 at 1:33 pm #401821
do we know its vinyl release date? it can make it eligible…September 9, 2014 at 1:41 pm #401822
All signs point to a complete October 2014 release date. The album is just essentially being given away / streaming for free until then. If the album hasn’t been physically released or even sold copies during September 2014, I doubt it’ll be eligible. Maybe U2 will try a very limited pre-release sale before the date to qualify, but I don’t see how this iTunes event can qualify if the album doesn’t have a release external to this before the cutoff date.
My gut is that they push the U2 album to next year.September 9, 2014 at 3:12 pm #401823
WOW! Off to iTunes to see what the deal is with all of this.September 9, 2014 at 3:22 pm #401824
Album was alright.
That Jay-Z and Beyonce influence on the release, though.September 9, 2014 at 5:15 pm #401825
According to Billboard, it’s not eligible for 2015. But, it’s really good, though.September 9, 2014 at 6:51 pm #401826
If it was eligible this year, they would be adding a few more to their mantle. I love the The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone). Probably my favorite thing they have done since “Beautiful Day.” Had it been eligible this year I would have it out in front for Rock performance and song and I don’t think ROTY or SOTY would be out of the question (for a nomination, not win) considering how weak this year is. Even though U2 is now a veteran band, this song is commercial for rock/alt radio.
Not sure how I feel overall about the album yet–I want to give it a few more listens.September 9, 2014 at 7:17 pm #401827
Upon first listen, highlights for me are “Every Breaking Wave”, “Raised By Wolves”, “Volcano”, “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)”, “Song For Someone”, and “Cedarwood Road”. Overall, I’m really digging this album. Better than ‘No Line On The Horizon’ and their AotY winning ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’. Also, closing track “The Troubles” features Lykke Li on the chorus (it’s a lovely touch).September 9, 2014 at 8:00 pm #401828
The album was already pre-installed into my iTunes library. Genius promo!September 9, 2014 at 8:00 pm #401829
U2’s my favorite band so it’s a bit of an understatement to say I was pleasantly surprised by this development. I’ve listened to the album a couple times through now and am really liking it.September 9, 2014 at 8:09 pm #401830
It’s unfortunate that they won’t be eligible for GRAMMYs considering the weak year it’s been for Rock.September 10, 2014 at 7:08 am #401831
I don’t know, I find the new album a bit bland.September 11, 2014 at 7:28 am #401832
This stunt is really backfiring for them. The album is getting mixed reviews, articles are ridiculing them, and people aren’t really happy that the album is sitting in their iTunes without permission.
I doubt this gets much Grammy play next year.September 11, 2014 at 9:02 am #401833
