Lastly, at the 48th Grammys in 2006, “Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz and De La Soul winning Pop Collaboration over Grammy favorites Foo Fighters and Norah Jones for “Virginia Moon”.
How is that surprising? “Feel Good Inc” was a ROTY nominee and the biggest hit of the bunch. There was no way it was going empty-handed.

**And “Born in the USA” (Bruce Springsteen) too
“Fearless” winning over “I Am Sasha Fierce” (Beyonce) and “The Fame” (Lady Gaga) for Album of the Year in 2010.
No hate… But definitely unexpected

Fearless slayed the awards season prior to actual Grammy. It wasn’t really a surprise

Even as a swiftie or not of course it was a surprise.
The impact I Am Sasha Fierce and The Fame has is incomparable.

Being of the opinion that fearless didn’t deserve to win doesn’t mean it was a surprise … as far as i know, most people were predicting either Fearless or The Fame.

It spent 11 weeks at #1 on BB200, the best selling album of 2009, the most awarded country album of all time. Not to mention, multiple publications predicted it to win AOTY.

Fearless winning was only unexpected because of how weird and cool choice of a winner she would be coming off a hot mess of winners in the 2000s.
The most popular album and most acclaimed mainstream album from a 20 year old kid who at the time, was dragged for primarily appealing to children.
It spent 11 at #1 on Billboard, spawned two HUGE crossover pop hits, won all of the country awards, won a slew of pop awards (YBWM famously the country video to win a VMA) and was adored in the industry for being an indie artist who received the dying album sales market.
It was anything but a unexpected win.

what impact?
Gaga herself (and her singles) changed the industry, The Fame as album is a dated mess. While IASF is a cute lil populist hit for Beyoncé ,outside of Single Ladies becoming the first internet viral hit what did she impact, even she herself doesn’t perform the album anymore outside of Diva and Halo.
January 17, 2021 at 2:18 am #1203987648Fearless win was as deserved as WWAFAWDWG win. If you consider Taylor’s win undeserved then Billie’s was undeserved too.

Well if Billie had an album like I Am Sasha Fierce and The Fame in contention. But it didn’t.
Also, I NEVER SAID UNDERSERVED
IT SAID SURPRISE/ UNEXPECTED. WTF.
Surprises can be good or bad. Either good surprise, bad surprise, it’s still a surprise. Wtf??? Nothing wrong with it.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2021 at 6:03 am #1203987783Fearless was the safest choice in AOTY over I’m Sasha Fierce and The Fame. Also the swept across all country award shows helped her. I think it was deserved.
However, 1989 win was a big NO, horrible win over more deserving black artists and now how they setting her up for a third win, it’s disgusting.
