I feel like the music threads are way less fun (and way more hostile) than the Movies and TV threads, so I figured it would be fun to have a thread for unpopular opinions.
Please make sure the opinions are, y’know, unpopular.August 11, 2019 at 9:45 pm #1203019986
I personally think Rihanna has a stronger discography than Beyoncé. Beyoncé might be more popular and is infinitely a much better singer, but her albums usually flatline for me. Aside from Lemonade, all her other albums are kinda generic pop and R&B.
While we’re at it Anti = Lemonade > Beyoncé (self titled).August 11, 2019 at 10:12 pm #1203019998
Ariana was better off doing r&b then this trap-pop/Bubblegum pop music. She turned into the rest of these generic pop girls and I feel like her talent is being wasted. Her voice suits the R&B sound better. But I guess this generic pop is working better for her since she’s so successful and selling a lot, so I guess its good for her.
This explains why Boyfriend didn’t work out because I felt like we were getting R&Bana back but that’s not what her fans (loyal fans were obviously here for it)/GP wants from her. She became like the rest of the pop girls. The songs that showcase her vocal abilities sadly aren’t the ones that pop off like her hits now.
Hopefully as she gets older her discography grows and elevates with her. I hope she won’t be in her 30s still writing like a 13 year old…. like another pop girl we know.

I really like Reputation. There’s objectively a lot that’s wrong with it, but as someone who’s in college and is figuring a lot of things out, it really resonated with me.
I was fine with Dua Lipa winning BNA. I don’t think she’s as good as H.E.R, but she had a strong debut and I think she has a lot of potential. And H.E.R is a Chris Brown apologist so there’s that.
Joanne is an underrated album. Not Gaga’s best, but that’s a high bar and it’s easily one of her most consistent albums. It was a necessary step to become the songwriter she was on the ASIB soundtrackAugust 11, 2019 at 10:58 pm #1203020031

One more before I go to bed.
ASIB winning AOTY would bother me so much and would honestly be tragic. Before I get dragged, I LOVE Gaga, and I LOVED ASIB movie and OST!
But….I would much rather have Gaga win AOTY for an album that’s 100% hers. Yes, I know she wrote and produced majority of the album but she would still have to share the win Bradley just for being hot…
The Monsters can’t say they want ASIB to win when they just listen to the same 5 or so Gaga songs. They literally forget its a whole ass joint project.
But…. ASIB is the safest choice out of all the contenders so its most likely up there at least.

Mariah Carey was a far better vocalist than Whitney Houston.August 12, 2019 at 12:29 am #1203020105
I know we are Grammy centric, but I feel like the Grammys tend to do a good job picking the winners for the Grammys when giving commercial wins rather than critical ones. The difference is with the Oscars, they don’t normally have to go to the lowest common denominator and pick the movie that was safe (*cough, cough, Green Book*), but they choose wins that are great and stand the test of time. I wish that was something they should have done rather than give it to people who know how to sell records rather than people that value artistic integrity.

Dua Lipa didn’t deserve to win Best New Artist, but she makes a more deserving winner than H.E.R. Neither one are great artists yet, the only nominee that’s already great is Margo Price, but they both show strong potential. I think Dua Lipa’s current discography is stronger than H.E.R.’s and her win, while not ideal, is justified.August 12, 2019 at 5:07 am #1203020237

Ariana Grande needs to take a break cos she’s been churning out same crappy songs for some years now.
Adele isn’t creative

Khia is the Queen of Rap. She’s independent, never needed a co-sign from a male rapper, and has sustained longevity.
“My Neck, My Back” is her biggest hit. But I can name at least 10-20 songs off the dome that are classics.

I agree that H.E.R is overrated. I liker H.E.R, and she’s insanely talented, but seeing people talk shit about Dua Lipa was unfair; she has a stronger discography, IMO.
As much as my gay ass loves those albums, The Fame and The Fame Monster have aged terribly, mostly thanks to the production (which sounds outdated).

I 100% agree with everything you said.
