Beyonce’s not winning AOTY until she’s like 80 and they finally decide she’s worthy of a sympathy win
We need the 33% rule back.
We need 5 category general field back.
Lizzo is loved and I hope she releases a way better album than Special.
side note harry sweeping all of his album categories but nothing for as it was was VERY weird

February 6, 2023 at 9:24 am #1205294195They should bring the 33% rule back.
What’s the 33% rule? I don’t remember it!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 6, 2023 at 9:29 am #1205294202What did we learn?
1. Adele is FINALLY beatable. Though, I always kept her possibly doing another storm in the cards, the red flags were clear all year and a lot of people here seemingly refused to take note of that. 30 didn’t have any enthusiasm and that showed in how bad she underperformed. When she lost a locked Music Film and then Pop Vocal to Harry, I figured she was done for.
2. Beyonce will continue to come up short unless she regresses into a milquetoast album like IASF (there’s a reason why that was her closest to an AOTY win) and I don’t see that ever happening so….her and Kendrick will have to be content with never being universal choices for the top prize. It’s like I’ve said so many times that the problem is within the voters themselves and a strenuous overhaul needs to occur if we want to see more black winners in AOTY.
3. Winners will probably be more messy if this keeps it up. As It Was lost everything it was up for but Harry had enough support to just win AOTY. About Damn Time loses Pop Solo and SOTY but comes up in ROTY? Good for Lizzo, though. She makes comfortable enough music for them to reward.
4. Mary had dead passion and the Soul Train Awards told us that. Good Morning Gorgeous was no Heaux Tales
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 6, 2023 at 9:45 am #1205294233The 33% limit definitely upset a lot of people in the industry, because engineers and mixers were being left out, even though they worked on the album. Imagine you colaborated 20% or 25% which could be three or four songs on an album and they don’t consider you as nominee. Everyone wants to be nominated, but the problem I think is the people like featured artists or other professionals who collaborated the less getting in for just one song in the album for example.
I think they will leave it just the way it is now, without the 33%, it shows how many people collaborated. For example, why is there the need of hiding that Beyoncé needed an army to make Renaissance?
February 6, 2023 at 10:14 am #1205294340Biggest takeaways:
- The definition of a “grammy darling” is becoming less and less relevant. Adele (and to a lesser extent in recent memory, Billie) were both deemed Grammy Darlings, unbeatable, etc., and the last two years saw them both severely underperform. I got called delusional/etc. for saying that Adele needed an undeniable album to win again this year, but clearly that was the case.
- After the last two years, I’m ready to confidently proclaim that trends/voting history/patterns/etc. are also becoming less relevant. If someone here had predicted a ROTY/SOTY split, a Pop Solo/ROTY split, Harry winning AOTY w/ nothing for As It Was, etc. they would have been genuinely ran off this site and called delusional. Now that results are being decided without a committee, we’re seeing a lot more left-field, unpredictable wins, because in reality voters are not sitting with their ballots for hours dwelling on the politics of it all, and are likely simply just voting for the songs/albums/artists/etc. that they’d like to see win.
- AOTY as a category is just getting safer and safer. It’s insane, but Billie’s win will probably be the most “scandalous” album (lol) that we’ll see win for a while. Harry, Jon Batiste, Kacey, and even Folklore were all extremely safe, extremely palatable, extremely
whitewinners that appealed to voters on a wide scale. (I know Jon Batiste isn’t white, but that album was, lol.) Bey’s album was clearly the most well-made of this bunch, but I clearly had too much faith in voters for thinking that they’d have the patience to sit through an album that was so openly celebrating Black, queer culture.

February 6, 2023 at 10:49 am #1205294409I learned that:
. Support from your gender field IS important (Samara Joy winning in Jazz and BNA).
. We expected a sweep from Adele and got a clean sweep from Encanto lol.
. Outside support if can be very advantageous (All Too Well at BMV after triumphing at VMAs and festivals) .
. The split in the Pop block is real.
. BPDGP is the easiest category for a hitmaker to win .
. Sometimes voters will prefer to keep their choices on albums and songs separate (Brandi and Bonnie in the Americana field).
. The re-record thing really hurt Taylor (based on what one of the anonymous voters within the forum said).
. BMV should have been aired at the main ceremony dammit!
. Voters are still very prejudiced about overproduced works with multiple collaborators.
. Voters like the Billie Eilish type minimalist pop style after all.
. Never underestimate non-mainstream genres .

February 6, 2023 at 11:03 am #1205294430I’m not sure if sweeps are over, Silk Sonic could’ve swept last year if they released the album on time and they could’ve won this year too
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 6, 2023 at 11:05 am #1205294439What’s the 33% rule? I don’t remember it!
A person needed to contribute to at least 33% of an album to get credited in AOTY.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 6, 2023 at 11:22 am #1205294471The expanded 10 nominees in general field categories will lead to more splintered voting and low plurality wins in the future. Thanks for your continued fuckery, Harvey Mason, Jr.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 6, 2023 at 12:15 pm #1205294549That they should rename the Best Pop Duo/Group Perfomance category and that boomer voters bought into this Harry Styles persona his team created.
