I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston deserved its win for Record of the Year hands down period.

I’m not saying it didn’t, but when you consider other elements of the recording, it’s basically Whitney’s vocals that held it together; hence, I suggested the Performance of the Year award.

Something like “bad guy” is a standout ROTY choice because it’s got great production values but it lost BPSP to “Truth Hurts” because, as performance, it didn’t trump “Truth Hurts” (nor “Spirit” imo).

ROTY and SOTY should not be combined. If it ends up redundant oh well, but at least at some ceremonies the winner is split

Did we ever learn whether Lana Del Rey and Bon Iver were offered performances or not? What about Vampire Weekend?

I’m assuming they weren’t offered a performance slot in the main show, which would mean that only 5 out of 8, or 62.5 % of the AOTY nominees were offered a performance.

Is this a record low for recent AOTY nominees?

Or did we have years with only 3 out of 5 (60%) were given a performance when there were 5 AOTY nominations? I’m not talking about years where one or more nominees were touring or decided not to perform for some other reason.

Also we just had 2 white women win AOTY in a row. Perhaps the committee might be under some pressure to ensure a person of colour wins again in 2021 or 2022. Will the Bruno Mars Disney Movie (and it’s music) be released in time to be eligible for the 2021 awards show?

Ehrlich told Bon Iver that “Holocene” was too slow and boring for the show in 2012, when they were up for 3/4 of the general field categories, so I doubt they were offered a spot this year.

For someone like Bon Iver who would have to travel from Wisconsin, there is little benefit in attending the Grammys, where he won’t perform, just to get his face on TV for 5 seconds.
