Obviously it wouldn’t be a replacement but it would be nice to have a precursor for the Grammys, especially when it could boost lesser known works. The Grammys are WAY too mainstream-focused instead of quality-focused, especially when compared to the Oscars and Emmys
It can’t be a “precursor” if it’s not industry voted.

How? The actual Critics Choice Awards are not industry-voted, and neither, for that matter, are the Golden Globes. They are still considered to be precursors to the Academy Awards, which is industry-voted.

February 18, 2023 at 1:32 am #1205307258People would just buy votes from “critics”. Plus they are not musicians so the show wouldn’t have the same prestige. Just accept the fact that even though the Grammys has it faults, no other voting body matters more than your peers. I wish the AMAs would go back to just industry voters.
Does this vote buying happen in the Critics Choice Movie Awards, or is it more a case of lobbying than vote buying? How would this be different from the lobbying that goes on during Grammy season?
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 18, 2023 at 8:15 am #1205307435There seems to be a corruption issue among some critics too though. Like Rolling Stone, for instance, is just a disaster at times from their lists to their reviews and more. Then there are critics that do dumb shit like the one from The Independent giving Donda a flat 0 admittedly (and this is important) because of the controversial featuring acts and not based off the music alone.
So, while I’d love to see the likes of Animal Collective, Caroline Polachek, and Kelela hold some form of award for their work someday, I’ll settle for the lists from the critics I’ve grown to have some respect for and, more importantly, my own damn opinion.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 18, 2023 at 9:13 am #1205307456You mean if there was a trifecta/regionals for music the way there is for films? I’m guessing
Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Guardian would be the “trifecta” in the sense of being amongst the most prestigious while other publictions like Billboard, NYT, The Skinny would be regionals. People like Beyonce (Lemonade and Renaissance) and Kendrick (TPAB and Damn) would sweep the trifecta more than once as well as storming heavily with regionals. Fiona Apple and Lana could do the sweep their respective years or at least 2/3. Pre 2020s Kanye would probably be like a Paul Thomas Anderson in which almost all of his work gets a citation. Fun to speculate.

Oh, sorry I am answering this message really late. I don’t really know how that trifecta thing works. What I had in mind at first was to have representatives from each of those sites (Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Vulture, etc.) do direct voting for nominees and winners. I’m open to learning about other voting methods.

April 1, 2023 at 6:07 am #1205373295Seriously sorry for the delay, I have been redoing and expanding the hypothetical list of nominees and it has been particularly difficult especially with the songs because they do not appear on pages like Metacritic. So to determine I had to go through several Year End lists and find matches or who ranked highest (in some cases choosing personally). I probably snubbed someone but believe me I struggled with this.
I also made the somewhat drastic decision to go outside of the Grammy guidelines and move the eligibility date from November 2021 to October 2022 (because honestly the October entries get very old for the next period) so you will see some changes to the list as well as adding the amount of nominees in some genres and in the top categories (AOTY being the only one with 10 spots).

This is surprisingly a very good list! I wish the Grammys would look like this

For me the Grammys night is much more emotional than the Oscars because anything can happen. Same with the nominations day. If there were serious precursor, then winners would be more predictable. VMA, BBMAs and AMAs are spaces to campaign and be considered as relevant in an eligible year. That’s enough.
