More awards should be handed out at the actual ceremony (Big 4 + 1 of each big genre at least)

I don’t know if they’ll ever cut down on the performances — because let’s be honest, I can see casual viewers being more drawn to watch by performances than awards, even if they later realize how slow the show feels when there are 100 performances and 6 awards…

But maybe they could at least bring back the winner montages before/after certain commercial breaks. I remember they still did those when I started watching the Grammys back in the early 2000s (along with moments where they’d pan a certain artist in the crowd and announce one of their pre-telecast wins on the lower third, which I hated), and they definitely made the awards feel like less of an afterthought.

There really isn’t any way to “fix” all the Grammy issues. Art is highly subjective. And award shows will always have elements of bias and politics.

Just to clarify, it’s not on the basis x person needs to win. It’s more on the basis of being more fair and representative of the music landscape. If we are not seeing the representation based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or national identity within the nominations, I see that as the main problem. Again, the Deborah Dugan allegations towards the Grammys show we do not have a fair system. They have never favored Black winners under the same grounds as white winners have won. Hip-Hop and Indie/Underground music is misrepresented in base categories and not allowed to participate in the big leagues if they do not sell well. Rappers like Roddy Ricch & Cardi B, cannot be nominated for BNA meanwhile Finneas literally won 5 Grammys last year (including POTY mind you) and he is going up for BNA this year.

Sure art is subjective, but to whom?

Only BNA rules have to be fixed.

    Otherwise, i have no issues.

Combine ROTY/SOTY. Create one category to honor the entire product – artistry, songwriting, production, mixing, etc., as long as each meet the 33% requirement. The fact that AOTY is now honoring songwriting is even more reason why ROTY and SOTY should not be separate.

    – Combine ROTY/SOTY. I’d have Song categories in all the genre fields however.
    – Scrap BNA, or at least come up with a clear set of rules that can’t be bent for certain artists. Rename it to Best Breakthrough Artist.
    – Combine all Solo and Duo/Group Performance categories.
    – The majority of those Classical categories can go.
    – Get rid of the Latin categories. Defeats the purpose of the Latin Grammys.
    – Publish full lists of submissions pre-nominations for EVERY category like certain award bodies.
    – Only invite General Field nominees to perform.
    – Online streaming of the award show. I get why they don’t want to do this, but times are changing. No one has cable anymore.

Little reminder: Someone being a “white male” doesn’t mean they automatically have a bad/narrow taste in music. I find the “less white dudes” cries pointless. What the hell is that even supposed to mean?

I am creating a video regarding should the Grammys be reformed. As you guys know, the Grammys have been lacking in the presentation of awards, nominations, winners, and categories. How should they be fixed to represent this new growing landscape of trap and streaming? I am going to bring up a couple of topics and I would like to have a nuanced discussion: -the sexism towards women behind the scenes and within categories -Having a Progressive R&B/Urban Contemporary Album -Having an Alternative Album -the racism with Black artists in pop -the lack of awards presented in the main-telecast -not having a pop song category -Having a Best New Artist in general -not having any rap songs in SOTY that do not just speak on police brutality/racial injustice -the same winners in ROTY and SOTY -only the ROTY and SOTY winners are top 10 hits -No Urban Artist has won AOTY since Outkast in 2004 -the Grammys lack of attention to underground artists -the Grammys are a popularity contest with highest charting songs or albums

    1. “Blacks in pop”

Um, quick question, how many Blacks actually submit to pop instead of UC or “Progressive” R&B? What artists even were “snubbed” from Pop? We literally just saw Beyoncé get an undeserved nod there last ceremony. There’s no point here. Quit this.

    2. “police brutality”

Um, “Alright” says hi. When the song is actually nice and they like it enough, it will be nominated regardless its “message.” NEXT!

    3. “same ROTY and SOTY winners”

I’m happy “Don’t Know Why,” “Not Ready to Make Nice,” “Need You Now,” and other deserving tracks have rightfully earned this feat. Look, this isn’t a rule, it’s only happened way too much. If they want to give the same song ROTY and SOTY for the next ten years, there’s NO problem there. It’s THEIR opinion. Moreover, some songs actually deserve both.

    4. “ROTY and SOTY winners are top 10 hits”

So? Something being a “top 10 hit” doesn’t exactly mean its bad, you know? NEXT.

    5. “No ‘Urban’ artist since Outkast”

And your point is? Look, when they like something, they like it. Cut these people some slack for not having the same music tastes as you. I am strongly against the idiotic shaming of not having enough “urban” winners. If someone’s favorite albums for a decade are all by non-“urban” people, it’s THEIR opinion.

    6. “attention to underground artists”

Look, they seem to be trying IMO. The likes of Mitski might take awhile to hop on their radar, but hey, at least they’ve finally put Lana in the GF even though she’s long past “underground” now.

    7. “popularity contest”

Maybe don’t watch the show then? I mean, I don’t get how it’s still a “popularity contest” when Golden Hour can win, but go off.

    Onto the actual points.

    1. the “sexism”

NO organization in America or ANYWHERE should be sexist. Period. However, I don’t see their awards themselves as sexist in any means. Please, by all means, if in a year only men are deserving of recognition, SO BE IT.

    2. lack of awards presented in the main telecast

    Yes. TOO many filler performances.

    3. No Pop song category

Yes, big issue here as well.

Someone: makes some type of plea for any kind of racial diversity, general diversity, wanting some long-standing biases to be dismantled.

JennyLewisFan: That’s racist! But also, racism doesn’t exist.

As someone on here already said, get rid of the best new artist category and just have it be breakthrough artist. Stop putting black artists in the R&B category when they’re clearly doing pop music.

I’m not sure how much “breakthrough artist” changes things. Perhaps a few wins would change, but I’m not sure if they would all be for the better.

Regarding black artists in the R&B category – can you give examples of black artists who said they submitted song X in pop, and the song (or album) was moved into R&B instead?

Imagine if the Grammys automatically put black artists in pop when a committee decided their song sounded “pop”. You would have people complaining that they were put in pop where they have no chance against Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

Of course I’m assuming that artists have the choice of where to submit their songs/albums – or do record companies do that for the artists? In which case the Grammys might not be the problem.

I personally think there are too many awards and the voters are allowed to vote on too many categories, so they don’t restrict themselves to the categories where they are qualified to vote and have some actual knowledge of the genre. Instead they get a voting form with a 1000 names in each category and they just pick someone they recognise/like/heard on the radio that morning.

Your whole post, which I don’t want to quote all of…just wow.

What a narrow-minded point of view.

For Ms. Jenny Lewis, I’m not talking about the nominations/awards, I’m talking about the system as a whole.

    1. Beyoncé, while I love her, did not belong in pop album last year. Again, there should not even be an Progressive R&B Album in the first place. I am also not denying strides from the Grammys in pop, such as Lizzo and Lil Nas X, but there needs to be progress.
    2. Alright is literally one of the biggest police brutality songs of the last decade. “we hate po-po//Wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho”
    3. The Grammys literally give ROTY & SOTY to the same artist. In the past 10 years, they have not given it to a smaller charting song. Again this might be subjective, but like there are SO many people complaining already that Blinding Lights is winning ROTY & SOTY is undeserved. It’s safe and does not give any lyrical depth.
    4. I do think being a top 10 hit is bad, but again it’s a popularity contest where any song that is nominated that does not chart near the top 10 will not win.
    5. Again, I don’t think the issue is that Urban artist should just win because they are big. What I’m trying to say is that Urban artists can sell well, be critically acclaimed, have longevity, campaign, and still will not get the respect as Pop artists.
    6. The fact that there’s an Alternative Album (not a Alternative Rock Album mind you) really just segregates those who charted well to those who did not.
    7. How is this not a popularity contest. I’m not talking about country or rock, it’s more the amount of pop albums that win AOTY. 21, 1989, 25, and WWAFAWDWG. Bruno Mars is a pop singer who made an R&B Album. Also Golden Hour is not a typical country album, it literally is a pop-infused country album. So I mean the commercial appeal towards the pop is sometimes disgusting. As someone who primarily listen to pop, I know there are other genres that need representation.

Ms Jenny Lewis as well, stop with the “don’t watch it if you don’t like how they are” bull crap. I’m not just the ones who are saying this stuff, it’s people in this forum and just casually viewers for YEARS who agree they are preserving the best in music. The Grammys are literally seen as a laughing stalk.

Addressing the urban diversity bias in the general field categories, needed categories restructuring, showing more awards on the telecast over being a glorified concert, & eliminating the blue ribbon panel.
