I’ve always knew that Lionel was not a favorite to win the award and recently saw a paper from Salt Lake City citing that ”he was surprised” to win.
As far as I know Tina Turner (comeback) and Prince (such a big era) were front-runners. Right? Am I missing something?
The nominees were:
Lionel Richie – Can’t Slow Down
Reply
Cyndi Lauper – She’s So Unusual
Prince & The Revolution – Purple Rain
Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A.
Tina Turner – Private DancerJune 30, 2020 at 11:24 am #1203558854Purple Rain should have won. Born in the U.S.A. would be an amazing pick.
Lionel Richie winning is such a flop. Prince deserved it and would have been the best AOTY winner of the decade.

Mr. Morale & The Big SteppersJune 30, 2020 at 11:28 am #1203558867I actually read pundit predictions from that year in the archives and I remember Paul Grein’s specifically, and Lionel Richie was predicted to win by several. He was the safe, most AC choice that appealed to country voters and also had a ton of commercial success and goodwill from his time with The Commodores. He might have been the worst pick that year, but I’m pretty sure his win was not surprising in the least.

Many pundits predicted him. His album was a big seller, which helped.
ReplyCopy URLJune 30, 2020 at 11:39 am #1203558900I dunno. Maybe Bruce Springsteen since his album sold so well and had seven top 10 hits and a ROTY nominee. Prince was still robbed, though.

The original 24K Magic. Prince or Tina deserved (especially Prince)

He totally would have deserved it. If he had won, he would have been in a tight race with The Joshua Tree and Graceland as the best winner of the decade.

ReplyCopy URLJune 30, 2020 at 1:10 pm #1203559060Both Prince and Ritchie had POTY nominations. Richie had to accompanying SOTY nomination while Prince did not. I remember reading a few predicitons and both Richie and Prince were the most popular predictions.
ReplyCopy URLJune 30, 2020 at 1:30 pm #1203559089Honey, Prince should’ve won with Tina Turner in second. However, I do like Lionel’s album. No complaints.
ReplyCopy URLJune 30, 2020 at 1:33 pm #1203559096Had Lionel Richie not won AOTY, he would have been the only nominated artist to go home emptyhanded.
ReplyCopy URLJune 30, 2020 at 1:41 pm #1203559101I like Purple Rain. I really do. But it’s not better than Thriller and that’s a fact. I think it’s up there with Can’t Slow Down and Born in the USA. A month before at the AMAs, Lionel won 6 awards. Prince won 3 so I figured that Lionel most likely would’ve won, which he did. Music is subjective. The academy voted and they chose Lionel.
ReplyCopy URLJune 30, 2020 at 3:00 pm #1203559340The worst album won lol. This should have went to Bruce Springsteen or Prince. But I personally wouldve gave it to Tina. Not enough Black females have won AOTY for me.
