Purple Rain is definitely on par with Thriller.

Thriller sold over 100 million. Purple Rain only sold less than a quarter of that. The Bodyguard Soundtrack doubled Purple Rain’s sells and I love all 3 albums.

True. In fact, forget what I said earlier. Thriller is hands down the best AOTY-winning album of the decade.

Yes, maybe commercially, but Purple Rain is still on par with Thriller, quality-wise. PR doesn’t have anything as mediocre as “Baby Be Mine” or “The Girl is Mine”.

I don’t think anyone even mentioned Thriller before you did

Purple Rain is 13x Platinum in the US, spawned four classic top 10 hits, is one of the most acclaimed albums of all time (and absolutely on par with Thriller according to critics) and even won an Oscar. Thriller has it beat in terms of videography but musically-wise, they’re absolutely equal

Purple Rain did more than enough to win AOTY even with the crazy standards back then. It’s ridiculous that it lost to a vastly inferior album

I actually think Prince’s best album is Sign O’ the Times, but Purple Rain is nearly as amazing and certainly deserved to win over a far weaker album. On the other hand, Sign O’ the Times lost to The Joshua Tree, a decision that’s pretty hard to argue with.

Purple Rain and Sign O’ The Times both are masterpiece but Purple Rain was a better AOTY contender. It was a huge hit while Sign wasn’t

“Purple Rain” should have easily won that AOTY field.

Yeah, that probably hurt its chances along with MJ’s presence. Too bad.

Can’t Slow Down – Lionel Richie
She’s So Unusual – Cyndi Lauper
Purple Rain – Prince & The Revolution
Born in the U.S.A. – Bruce Springsteen
    Private Dancer – Tina Turner

This is a line-up where each of the nominees had big hits and their albums were everywhere. It was not surprising that Lionel Richie won because this album and songs were all over the radio and appealed to quite a few fans and had the below hits:

    “All Night Long (All Night)”
    “Penny Lover”
    “Stuck on You”
    “Running with the Night”
    “Hello”

I would have personally voted for Tina Turner. She had the comeback and it would have been amazing to see her music sweep Album, Record and Song of the Year. Also, she was nominated in Pop, Rock and R&B winning for Pop – What’s Love Got To Do With It and Rock – Better Be Good To Me.

“Take Me With U” is corny and white as hell. “Darling Nikki”…..let’s not go there.

At least Tina won ROTY. And arguably the best ROTY ever
