It seems the Grammys often make exceptions to their “rules” when it comes to this category.   However, I am not so sure Ariana Grande will get the nomination.  I am not currently predicting her, but she could get in.  But I have a feeling they will pass on her like they did Leona Lewis, Lorde, etc..

Sam Smith is the solid front runner. Spoilers would be Azela and Grande if she submits herself.
I thought that you have to have had a first solo album with in the eligiablitly period to qualify?

Artists are often nominated after the year in which their first album is eligible.

However, even if that were the case, two other artists you predicted, HAIM and Iggy Azalea, would not have been eligible under this thought process.
I didn’t know that, thanks.

Sam Smith is by far the frontrunner

Although Lorde was the frontrunner for BNA last year, and well we know how that went….

Lorde didn’t get nominated because voters probably wanted to see if she could surpass the “Royals” fame + she didn’t even have an album out until the end of eligibility in September 2013.

Sam Smith’s been generating buzz since last summer/fall when he appeared on Disclosure’s “Latch”, released EPs in the winter, appeared on SNL in March, released In the Lonely Hour in June, and has been building momentum with “Stay With Me” all summer. He’s a shoe-in nominee.

I’m wondering if Lorde could receive a BNA this year?

Lorde was eligible for BNA last year; I cannot buy that thet wouldn’t nominate in BNA her because they wanted to see if she could surpass “Royals” yet they gave her the Grammy for Song of the Year, Best Pop Album, and Best Pop Solo Vocal Performance.   It was just one those eyebrow raising snubs they often dish out in that category.

She won’t receive a BNA nomination this year–not after winning what she did last year.

I believe Iggy Azelea is not a lock for a nomination. She could be one of those artists who winds up in ROTY and/or SOTY but miss out on a Best New Artist bid. Her music is critically panned, her album sales are not impressive and she has yet to stand on her own.

They are really weird about that. Ed Sheeran was nominated for Best New Artist last year even though + was a Spring 2012 release and “The A Team” was nominated for Song of the Year 2 years ago

You’re eligible for BNA if you’ve been previously nominated, but not if you’ve previously won a Grammy.

No, this doesn’t work if the nominee in question is already a winner. This can’t be an Ed Sheeran situation b/c Lorde won multiple Grammys.

I actually think this might happen. She can pull a B.O.B. They have so much similarities. While I’m predicting her, I can see this happening.

Who ever the hot new country star is this year

If the CMA award winner for Best New Artist is who makes it in there for this award, I predict that either Cole Swindell or Thomas Rhett will be the chosen one. (smiles)

God bless you and them always!!!

I don’t think a country act will get in sad thing is I don’t know any of the CMA nominees for BNA. The only hope for country in the GF is Miranda Lambert in AotY.

Agreed it’ll be tough for a country act to get into BNA.  I think Lambert in AOTY is the best bet, but I am still putting “Automatic” and “Give Me Back My Hometown” in my top 10-15 contenders for SOTY as well; SOTY is the category where the Blue Ribbon Committee has traditionally tried to award the country genre most often.
