Since Goldderby is predicting folklore to win it makes sense that something else will win.

Pop is a very broad genre. Nora Jones, Duffy, John Meyer, Adele have all won pop vocal album with albums that are in the same vein that is folklore. Singer songwriter, ballad dominant.
No I’m not, and the winners you just mentioned above were chosen by voters from past years. Not saying that effects Taylor, but I wouldn’t rely on winners from nearly a decade ago (chosen by old voters) to benefit Taylors chances. I could be absolutely wrong though. Best Pop Vocal Album have usually gone to artists with pretty big eras.

No one was doubting Dua was going to submit to Pop. And even if people try to push the whole “R&B Ariana” narrative, she will always submit to pop categories.
The concept of “pop” doesn’t really exist other than popular music, which often does align to a certain sound. But the pop field has always been an array of genre influences. Future Nostalgia being a “pure pop” record does not give it a bigger chance of winning over folklore. They both showed they have close or an equal amount of pop support.

Oh absolutely. If that abomination to music got into BPSP over Stupid Love, then Justin likely has more pop support than Gaga this year

BNA: Phoebe BridgersNovember 27, 2020 at 12:07 am #1203876930Not y’all thinking Dua has higher chances than Taylor because of her “poppier” sound when Adele, a soul-oriented singer, won BPVA twice last decade.
Pop is more than dance-pop.

Except Best Music Video. It has a committee.
But I kinda agree. Though I think it’s unlikely, if there will be a dark horse, it’ll be Harry.

3. Fine Line
4. Changes
5. ChromaticaIt’s honestly a tossup between Dua and Taylor but I could potentially see the Stevie Nicks protégée upsetting. It all depends on who has the most momentum during final round voting

— got everything she needed and even Pop Duo on a popular vote
2. Folklore
— missed ROTY and made up for it with Jack’s POTY nod.
3. Fine Line
— he could’ve missed altogether with bias & stigma, got all his eligible pop slots + Music Video.
4. Changes
— Not winning but behind of Gaga due to Yummy > Stupid Love
5. Chromatica
— Yummy > Stupid Love, he clearly has more support this time around and she still got a win in Pop Duo.November 27, 2020 at 7:16 am #1203877354Not that either Justin or Gaga are contenders to win, but I think she’s ahead solely because of his comments about how he should’ve been nominated in R&B instead of Pop. I’m sure voters heard that, and I’m sure they didn’t like it.

FL v FN v Folk
Each have pop support as they all got into the categories they submitted for. Justin has left the chat, on his way to
R&B.I think Taylor & Dua are ahead though. Their GF noms will bring more eyes to them.

I mean folklore as an album has pushed more units and is more stable in the US then Future Nostalgia. Sweetener won and that era didn’t approach reputation in success so it really isn’t decided based on that. Yes your era must be commerically successful but at the end of the day dance-pop/pure pop albums are less rewarded than they used to be. 1989 was the last “pure pop” album to win BPVA and that was a much stronger album than Future Nostalgia.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 27, 2020 at 1:49 pm #1203878028I think right now Taylor and Dua are the only possible winners here. I think Taylor has the momentum to win this award, but I also think it’s close. Harry is a potential dark horse but I don’t see that happening. Only 3/10 of the last BPVA winners were pure pop or dance pop. And there’s a case to make that Kelly’s album had some alt/rock sounds to it. I think every year we have this conversation about “well, blank album is not pure pop so that won’t win”. It’s clear that at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. If anything I could see Dua and Taylor maybe get close to tying here with Taylor having more broad support in the general field but I see each win mirroring each other. Odds of Dua losing BPVA and winning AOTY are slim to none. Taylor losing BPVA and winning AOTY is slightly more possible but still unlikely. Which leads me to believe that Taylor is the front-runner here.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 27, 2020 at 1:54 pm #1203878033Other than Kelly Clarkson (2x, 2006 and 2013) you have to go back to 2000 when an artist not nominated in AOTY, took Pop Album over an AOTY nominee (Sting won, BSB nominated in both PVA/AOTY).
Can we see Harry, Gaga or Bieber take it over Dua/Taylor… hard to say. I’m pulling for folklore over Future Nostalgia, but if it’s going to be one of the other three I hope Fine Line takes it.

I have my doubts about the other three. I thin Fine Line is the dark horse pick but unless he was intentionally stopped at the general field then he has virtually no chance.
