As we all know, these two categories were consolidated into Best Pop Solo Performance starting with the 2012 ceremony. If those categories were kept, who would be the two winners in each year since then?

Usually one of them is an easy guess, as you can look to who won Pop Solo to pick the winner for one of those categories. However, there were all-female lineups in 2013 and 2020, so trying to guess who the male winner that year would have been is trickier.

    My guesses:

    2012
Female – “Someone Like You” (Adele)
    Male – “Grenade” (Bruno Mars)

    2013
Female – “Set Fire to the Rain” (Adele)
Male – “It Will Rain” (Bruno Mars)

(“I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz would have been another strong male option, but I think the Recording Academy’s longstanding infatuation with Bruno Mars would have given him the edge.)

    2014
    Female – “Royals” (Lorde)
Male – “When I Was Your Man” (Bruno Mars)

(“Mirrors” could also have won for Male, but Bruno Mars edged Justin Timberlake out for Pop Vocal Album.)

    2015
Female – “Shake It Off” (Taylor Swift)
    Male – “Happy” (Pharrell Williams)

    2016
Female – “Blank Space” (Taylor Swift)
Male – “Thinking Out Loud” (Ed Sheeran)

    2017
    Female – “Hello” (Adele)
Male – “Love Yourself” (Justin Bieber)

    2018
Female – “Million Reasons” (Lady Gaga)
Male – “Shape of You” (Ed Sheeran)

    2019
    Female – “Joanne” (Lady Gaga)
Male – “In My Blood” (Shawn Mendes)

(My male option is a bold pick since it didn’t get nominated over Beck or Post Malone, but Shawn Mendes got in Pop Vocal Album over the latter and the SOTY nomination could have given him the edge.)

    2020
    Female – “Truth Hurts” (Lizzo)
Male – “Someone You Loved” (Lewis Capaldi)

I’d be most interested to see what the lineups might look first; certainly, there are multiple occasions where voters who chose Males that ultimately placed 6+ would combine to skew the Female top 5 when forced to.

Similarly, I wonder if some of the surprises – like Gaga’s “Joanne” – might not have happened once Beck’s numbers are placed elsewhere.

2018 Female would have been interesting; 3 different winners have already been chosen: Lady Gaga for “Million Reasons,” Kesha for “Praying,” and Kelly Clarkson for “Love So Soft.” I was pretty surprised to see Gaga miss out on a SOTY nomination that year, so with Ed out of the way, I think she’d be most likely. But, “Praying” was a moment, although its nomination – even in a genre field – was great. Of course, would a Gaga win in 2018 prevent 2019’s?  Would missing 2019 give “Always Remember Us This Way” more of a shot for 2020?

Pretty shocked at Sia’s overall lack of Grammy love considering her place in the industry as a writer for the biggest names. “Chandelier” had all of the ingredients for at least 2, if not 3, awards, “Cheap Thrills” missing out on a ROTY nod would be similar to “7 Rings” or “OTR” missing in 2020, and I’d have thought a Sia + Kendrick collaboration like “The Greatest” would have been huge bait. [shrugs]

2016 Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: Kelly Clarkson, “Heartbeat Song”

We know you don’t like Taylor Swift but this in no way would happen… Blank Space was a million times better and more popular! The delusion is real!
