Maybe they were always considered as reliable filler nominees.
    1) The mid-90’s were an event when sounds that were previously considered fringe and subversive made the cross over (things like gangsta rap and alternative rock), helped by critics with the 60’s counterculture rock fetish badge.
By this point Mariah occupied the “popular” token position not only because of record sales, but because she represented pop radio sound (BTW on Daydream vs. Jagged Little Pill – the former enclosed more hit singles so I would consider it to be the bigger at the time album irrespective of overall album sales).
    3) What is most shocking to me is that Elton hadn’t won his first Grammy until practically two decades after the start of his career, and one that he SHARED with four other singers whose collective clout for sure helped propel the song to a win (That’s What Friends Are For).

Sometimes you just need a bit of luck. It’s all about competition, looking how many times an artist lost in GF doesn’t say anything, it’s about who won instead.

In Mariah’s case, she lost 8 times in the GF, but she should/could have won like at max 3 of that in my opinion.

Mariah Carey lost during a time when the Academy was trying to award indie choices instead of popular ones. Elton John losses are inexplicable.

    For Gaga:
2010: She was just too new to win anything at the time. And many pop voters were voting for Beyoncé.
2011: The committee shut out Bad Romance and I think she was too controversial to win at the time.
2012: She obviously lost to Adele and rightfully so.
2019: ???? Who knows what happened. My guess is that at the time the members were voting, they just didn’t feel Shallow was big enough (it didn’t win anything at the time and only peaked at #5). They probably thought This Is America defined the year more than Shallow. Shallow would’ve been a better contender for 2020.

I still think Gaga will eventually win in the GF. Who knows maybe the fact she lost last year will allow her to be nominated for AoTY this year and possibly win if her competition isn’t strong.

Who are the indie choices that you are referring to that Mariah Carey lost to?

Well that’s what she keeps saying. Didn’t fact-check her really.

Mariah in the 90s was equivalent to what Drake is in the ’10s when it comes to the Grammys, except Drake didn’t have to wait 15 years to win his 3rd Grammy. But they always seemed to lose to something more acclaimed or bigger.

I don’t know about that. Drake is the definition of a filler nominee in the GF like Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Post Malone. They will always likely have the least or second least amount of votes. Mariah probably wins AOTY if not for Alanis.

I also see Gaga fans bringing up the “Bad Romance” snub a lot. I don’t agree. She had just gotten in all 3 the previous year. All 3 again is overkill for an EP that is essentially a continuation of the previous era. Ideally she should have gotten ROTY and SOTY only. But the Academy did her one better by giving her an AOTY instead. Her fans should be thankful.

Bad Romance was one of the very few songs that went Diamond this century. Other songs like Fireworks and Roar were nominated in the GF.

So that’s why people expected Bad Romance to be there. It was definitely a huge hit and it won the two categories it was nominated for.

Also does anyone know who’s the artist with the most GF nods with 0 wins?

Mariah’s big problem was that back in the 90’s when she was getting lots of nominations she was still viewed by many in the industry as just a manufactured pop starlet who made boring adult contemporary music. She wasn’t viewed as a creative artist. Though Daydream was a big album and started to show some of her artistry, she still hadn’t totally shaken this image of being a boring artist. I think she got nominations on the strength of her vocal range and incredible sales, but they weren’t enough to help her win over artists with more street cred (for lack of a better descriptor).

And yet Celine Dion, who is the quintessence of middle of the road conventional pop was able to pull off a win literally one year later over Beck, The Fugees and The Smashing Pumpkins.

That could describe Whitney Houston and Celine Dion as well yet they both won twice in the GF.

Well, I think Whitney always had more respect within the industry and was seen as a real artist. Plus, she had the support of the gospel and R&B voters as well. Plus, lets be real, Whitney was always seen as mega-star. Whitney transcended the pop star mold.

I really don’t know how Celine pulled off that win, I can just say she’s an abnormality in that sense.

But another poster said something really insightful; Mariah was somebody who really didn’t come across as likable to a great deal of people. Perhaps this is part of why she lost and lost often. Perhaps voters at the end of the day just preferred to vote for somebody they actually respected.
