what’s the purpose of her labelling it alternative when she just submitted it to pop

Because folklore is considered to be a pop album with elements of country, dream pop, alternative, and folk.

At the end of the day, Folkore is the same thing Taylor offers, just with more echoes, somber sounds and ripping off The National’s sound.

It’s more or less a chamber pop album with lots of different styles. The thing is that while Taylor is a great writer, she is too structured (this is neither a good nor bad thing) to be considered Alternative. Plus the Academy mainly knows her as “Taylor Swift, the biggest POP star of the generation.” It would likely have been moved anyway

how can it be ripping off The National’s sound when the actual National songwriter/member is one of the main writers/producers of folklore? you’re spewing nonsense.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 27, 2020 at 5:10 pm #1203806519I’m sure someone can make a long list of albums where the record label marketing people put an ‘alternative’ label on, but the album was submitted to pop vocal album.
When you have a million selling album in the US, so far the the only million selling album of 2020, you are not the alternative to anything, you are the mainstream.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 27, 2020 at 5:20 pm #1203806555The Alternative Album category was created to support albums that did not really intend to have commercial support in pop or rock, but we’re received well in indie circles and critics. That’s why MAGDALENE is more IMO pop than Folklore, yet is in Alternative Album.
I don’t see the issue with her competing in pop. Lorde, Lana, and Billie all competed in pop album, I genuinely see why Folklore wouldn’t.

Mr. Morale & The Big SteppersOctober 27, 2020 at 5:23 pm #1203806566It would’ve been moved to pop either way (as it should)
ReplyCopy URLOctober 27, 2020 at 6:12 pm #1203806663Genre is highly subjective, especially when it comes to Grammy placement. So much of this stuff is about expectations, demo appeal, marketing and politics.
“Alternative” and “pop” are both extremely vague. Neither are really any type of genre. “Alternative” can mean something different from what is considered mainstream and something without much commercial appeal. Or it can mean something avant-garde, idiosyncratic and challenging. Forklore doesn’t really fit into either category. But considering what they’ve let into Alternative over the years (especially by some male artists), had she submitted to and been accepted in Alternative I would have huffed but still been cool with it.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 27, 2020 at 6:20 pm #1203806686Can you give an example of an alternative album that didn’t belong?
ReplyCopy URLOctober 27, 2020 at 6:38 pm #1203806712Coldplay was always mainstream and started out as a poppier, catchier version of Radiohead. However, I can at least sorta get it. But what was with Lily Allen’s nod? That was pure pop. It was just filled with sarcasm. Gotye had no business being there yet alone winning. How is The White Stripes first few albums anything but “rock”? I sorta get the Alternative placement once we get to Get Behind Me Satan but not at all before that. And a lot of what people consider “indie pop” I would not place in Alternative. Anything by white men can be considered “alternative” it seems. But this is sorta the problem with catch-all categories.

Thank you, been thinking this since I saw it earlier today. Could have easily just been asked in Taylor’s thread…

It’s funny how you always talk as if you knew the reasons why Taylor and her team do things. But let me correct you:
At the end of the day, Folklore is Taylor’s most critically acclaimed album, praised by critics and other artists for its creativity, detail, distinction and boldness after she leaves her comfort zone.
Don’t mistake her for certain artist who rips off the sound and the style of Bowie and Jagger without having the talent to keep up his ambitions.
