Why wasn’t Album of the Year the final award of the night?

Am i going crazy or is album of the year always awarded last? Did they change the formatting and if so, why? Knowing folklore was the winner and then waiting another hour for best record felt very deflating. Can someone explain?

Lol they switch them every other ceremony. We also did not wait an hour for Record of the Year to be presented. It was literally presented after BTS performance who performed after Taylor won.

Grammys keep trying to make ROTY the big award of the night but everyone will always care about AOTY more.

They alternate between AOTY and ROTY as the last award of the night.

It’s also worth noting that ROTY has always been listed at the first category at the Grammys, if that means anything.

I do think they’re trying to make ROTY more important now that we’re in such a single-dominated industry. I don’t think it’s working though.

Honey, no one gives a shit about ROTY and AOTY.  The nominees in both were shitty.  It did NOT matter which order they were presented in.

This. It’s Category 1, so it makes sense to present it at the end. And even though they’ve alternated, I still recall seeing ROTY going on last (or basically at the same time as AOTY) more often.

The “album era” is over (for now) and we’re back to singles-oriented consumption. So if they want to stay relevant, they need to give prominence to ROTY (since SOTY is for songwriters, who are often not performers).

Many mainstream albums these days are basically compilations of singles released over the past year or longer (looking at you, Ava Max!), anyway, so…

If I remember correctly since last decade, Album of the year was presented last:
2010 Fearless
2011 The Suburbs
2012 21
2013 Babel
2014 Random Access Memories
2015 Morning Phase
2017 25
2018 24K Magic
2019 Goldenhour

So they’ve only switched it up in 2016 when Taylor won and last Year when Billie won. Correct me if I’m wrong.
