Based solely on quality, what would you say is the worst album to win the Grammy for Album of the Year?

I never once clapped for the Dixie Chicks when they got this award for their album named Taking The Long Way.

    God bless you always!!!

    Holly

P.S. Even if they weren’t the controversial act that they became, I still wouldn’t have been that much of a fan of them because to me there was never anything musically stand out ish about them to begin with.

With the exception of maybe three songs, Celine Dion’s “Falling Into You” is pretty horrid.

Falling Into You is awful, like most of Celine’s music. Babel is probably one of the worst AOTY wins too.

I am by no means a Taylor Swift fan, but there wasn’t any other viable choice. They had to choose between Beyonce, Dave Mathews Band, Lady GaGa and the Black Eyed Peas. 2010 was a terrible year for music for a reason… Fearless was the only viable alternative.

My choice: Babel. horrendously overrated, especially when they lose Americana album to Bonnie Raitt (righfully so) and win over El Camino and Blunderbuss.

Others that need to be mentioned:

    • Robert Plant and Allison Krauss’ Raising Sand over great albums from Radiohead and Coldplay
    • A boring U2 win (How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb) over Kanye West
    • An overdue win for Ray Charles over Green Day and Kanye West
    • Steely Dan getting a veteran win over excellent albums from Radiohead and Eminem
    • Did Tony Bennett really have to win for an MTV Unplugged album?
    • Lionel Richie winning over classic albums from Prince & the Revolution and Bruce Springsteen

Come Away With Me by Norah Jones.  Really?  That was one of the best AOTY winners of the 2000’s.  The 2009 AOTY nominees were dreadful.  I would have picked Dave Matthews Band to win.

The Dixie Chicks’ Taking The Long Way is an excellent AOTY winner.

I’m completely shocked by your pick so surprised.

“Taking the Long Way” is one of the best AOTY winners of the aughts. I knew and predicted that “Babel” would win, and for the most part, it was a win I was pleased with.

Of the album wins I know and listened to, the two that really stand out as bad winners are “Genius Loves Company” (win propelled by Ray Charles’s death; far greater albums in the running that year from Green Day and Kanye) and “River: The Joni Sessions” (that one was Amy Winehouse’s!). At least we’re getting away from these veteran rubber-stamp wins as the years progress.

I just realised Prince did not win AOTY for Purple Rain. Wow who in the hell could have made a better album.

To each his own. I didn’t care for her singing voice. It sounds like she was falling asleep while singing. It is a big deal that Norah Jones won, It is the only album to be won from an artist of Asian descent, I wish I liked it more.

I LOVE Taking the Long Way (and Not Ready To Make Nice)…whoever said that is crazy.
