It’s a bit surprising to me that Vanessa Carlton who clearly had general support for A Thousand Miles, couldn’t crack the BNA lineup. I easily would have put her in over Ashanti.

Ashanti had one of the biggest breakthrough eras of that decade. Personal preference aside, Ashanti definitely deserved her spot over Vanessa Carlton. If Vanessa spot was “stolen” by anyone, it was her “twin” Michelle Branch.

Yeah, after checking her discography, you’re right. I didn’t realize Ashanti’s debut album sold as well as it did.

Honey, Vanessa Carlton did NOT deserve a Best New Artist nomination.  Her peers, Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne, were miles better.  Ashanti was very deserving.  That bitch was huge in 2002.

Honey, I already replied with my retraction after checking Ashanti’s discography. Did you NOT see that?

Miles better is subjective, and if you want to bring up about being huge in 2002; Vanessa Carlton had the biggest hit between herself(one song on year-end Hot 100 – #6), Michelle Branch(one song on year-end Hot 100 – #23), Avril Lavigne(two songs on year-end Hot 100 – #11, #96), and John Mayer(one song on year-end Hot 100 – #43). But go on, Gucci. Keep posting your opinions as facts.

Are Whitney and Gaga really snubs though? I thought they weren’t eligible due to stupid rules. I wouldn’t call it a snub given that they would definitely be nominated and most likely win.

Honey, Vanessa Carlton was/is a one-hit wonder.  Her talented was/is NOT that great.  Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne had the better songs and artistry.  Plain and simple.

They definitely feel like snubs given how lenient (not to say fraudulent) the rules have been recently

Avril Lavigne is FAR from being a better artist than Vanessa Carlton.

Bjork should have been nominated. That was for me a surprise

Christina Aguilera win was one of the biggest upsets in Grammy History. Everyone´s reaction was priceless. She even didnt have a speech. I was so thrilled that anyone won but Britney. Delighted that it was Christina.

However, Christina being nominated in the Latin Field years back, it was quite awful. Her and Oscar de la Hoya (former boxer) gave very little credit to that field.

I’m no Xtina stan, but I was still living in Lima at the time her Spanish album came out and remember it being quite the hit. I still can’t decide whether I like “Come on Over Baby” or “Ven conmigo” better. “Por siempre tú” and “Falsas esperanzas” got some airplay, too. And “Pero me acuerdo de ti”… that was a classic, that was a classic.

I get that most of the album was translations of her English songs, but the new tracks she added made it deserving of the recognition (plus, it’s not like it doesn’t take skill to translate songs while keeping them catchy…).

So yes, she definitely got some votes due to name-recognition and the music-industry machine, but I wouldn’t compare that nomination to whatever the hell that De la Hoya album was (though honestly, the most surprising thing there was that he had somehow run out of payola steam by the time the Latin Grammys came around).

Ari Lennox deserved more support. She’s an incredibly talented artist. That’s one of the few snubs from this past decade that bothers me.
