I was inspired to make this poll because of the recent Annette Bening discussions and having just seen Being Julia for the first time; and as a fan of hers, I must say, I wasn’t impressed.
Hilary Swank is really overrated in most of her work, IMO, granted I haven’t seen Boys Don’t Cry. I’m not a big MDB fan. It was okay. I think Staunton and Moreno are the clear standouts here.

The winner was quite obviously Uma Thurman for Kill Bill Vol. 2 but of these nominees Winslet was by far the best in her most unique, real and layered performance to date.
Unimpressed with Staunton. I dislike most of Leigh’s films (the exceptions being Secrets & Lies and Happy-Go-Lucky) and Vera Drake imo was one of the worst.March 26, 2014 at 2:06 pm #547132
1. Julie Delpy, Before Sunset
2. Kate Winslet, Eternal Sunshine…
3. Uma Thurman, Kill Bill Vol 2
4. Imelda Saunton, Vera Drake
5. Catalina Sandino Moreno, Maria Full of Grace
Also, you need to see Boys Don’t Cry.March 26, 2014 at 3:45 pm #547133
Winslet, check out my full analysis of the race here!: http://filmoscarsandmore.blogspot.com/search?q=Best+Actress+2004&max-results=20&by-date=true
Have to say though that the year is not as strong as some think, with Winslet being the best with only some competition from Staunton. Swank’s not as bad as some say though and neither is Million Dollar Baby.March 26, 2014 at 4:29 pm #547134
I still, to this day, found Million Dollar Baby to be very overrated and I was not the least bit impressed with Hilary Swank. Is she a good actress? Yes. She is normally solid in everything and she was outstanding and deserving of her win in Boys Don’t Cry, but her work in M$B was extremely disappointed. She had a couple of nice moments, but she didn’t deserve a 2nd win.
My choice is easily Kate Winslet with Imelda Staunton a close second.March 26, 2014 at 7:19 pm #547135
I flipped a coin between Hilary and Imelda.
I’m not a huge fan of this Oscar year. Sideways is likely the film I was rooting for the most. That, and Clint Eastwood.March 27, 2014 at 8:40 am #547136
Between Swank and Imelda imo. Winslet performance in these boards is so overrated imo. She was great but nothing to run home and tell mama what I saw.March 27, 2014 at 12:37 pm #547137
This was one hell of a group.
1) Benning: This my fav of the group.
2) Swank: She was the obvious fav to win and she was great but I just liked Benning’s performance better.
3) Staunton: Great performance but she may have had a slight chance at winning at best.
4) Moreno: Part of me was rooting for her becuase she had such an awesome performance but I knew she had no shot.
5)Kate Winslet: Great movie but I don’t exactly see what made this performance so awesome and well regarded. Probably going to re-watch the film again to see if I missed anything.
Ideal nominees would be (imo):
5) Uma ThurmanMarch 28, 2014 at 12:19 am #547138
I don’t really get Winslet.March 28, 2014 at 12:59 pm #547139
I went with Swank. I know it isn’t as showy of a performance as some of the other nominees, but I felt that her Maggie seemed the most “real” if that makes any sense. Much like she lost herself in Brandon Teena, I feel she did the same in MDB. She WAS that character.
Staunton would be second for me.
Also, yes, you need to see Boy’s Don’t Cry.
