    From this list, Cukor by the slimmest margin (“Little Women,” “Dinner at Eight,” “Camille,” “The Women”…)

    Chaplin had some magnificent work on display in the 30s, as well…

    While I appreciate the mention of DeMille, his peak period was really in the late teens, when he and Griffith really were neck-and-neck as the premier American filmmakers pushing the art form to new heights (though DeMille went on to have a prodigious output in the 20s as well, and there are a handful of real gems from him in this period as well).

    I voted Leo McCarey, mainly for DUCK SOUP and THE AWFUL TRUTH.  Chaplin a close 2nd with Lubitsch, Capra, Fleming & Cukor near by.
