There wasn’t a huge Affleck/Bigelow surprise this year, but I think for me the most surprising would probably be the Hanks snub, or the Jonah HIll nomination.January 16, 2014 at 7:04 am #134075
American Hustle did not get nominated for Hairstyling, lolJanuary 16, 2014 at 7:04 am #134076
Tom Hanks being snubbed. That’s a shock for me and a terrible one.January 16, 2014 at 7:09 am #134077
I don’t think Amy Adams was as surprising as Meryl Streep, as weird as that sounds. In the last week or so, GoldDerby had the latter at 6th, and her film clearly wasn’t loved outside of the actors branch (seeing as how Tracy Letts ended up the odd-man-out in the Adapted Screenplay race).
I’m not too surprsied that DBC made it into Picture/Screenplay, as it was a frontrunner in the former and in the 6th slot for the latter. I’m REALLY surprised that it made it in for BEST FILM EDITING over the likes of Wolf/Wall Street. Just when it seemed like the support for the film couldn’t surprise us any more, the Oscars throw one more category in.
I picked Christian Bale, mainly because I just didn’t expect TOM HANKS to be the guy omitted. Granted, he wasn’t a lock like Dern/McConaughey/Ejiofor, but it was still a shock. Glad that Leo had passion on his side.
Ernest/Celestine was probably my next pick. Thought it could get in, but Monsters University was in my 2nd/3rd slot.January 16, 2014 at 7:19 am #134078
I wish I could vote for both Greengrass and Hanks and consider it a big ‘Captain Phillips snub’.
Still, I went for Hanks.
MU and AH for hairstyling were pretty big snubs as well.January 16, 2014 at 7:28 am #134079
Dang it. I hit on alot of these surpriss but just had wrong person missing! Argh!January 16, 2014 at 7:40 am #134080
Who cares about all those choices. NO PACIFIC RIM FOR VISUAL EFFECTS!!!! I mean honestly. Pacific Rim had the. best. effects. of. the. year. Screw Gravity! Pacific Rim all the way, baby!
FYC: Ready Player One. Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Original Score, Production Design, Director and BEST PICTURE (make it happen Oscars!!)January 17, 2014 at 1:13 am #134081
Definitely Bale. I didn’t doubt his popularity or the love for AH… But I really didn’t see him knocking out three other guys for a spot, and especially for such a weak and uninspiring performance.January 17, 2014 at 5:14 am #134082
12YAS missing Cinematography and Score was the biggest surprise for me since I was actually predicting Hanks to be snubbed by Bale.January 17, 2014 at 5:57 am #134083
I voted for Bale instead of Hanks/Redford. But the real (ridiculous) shocker was the Dallas Buyer’s Club editing nomination.January 17, 2014 at 11:40 am #134084
Bale getting in was the biggest surprise. I did not think the love for AH was that strong.January 17, 2014 at 12:27 pm #134085
Voted for Bale instead of Hanks/Redford too. That was simply not in the radar.
