CZJ was so worthy of her win I’m suprised some people hate she won (I’m sure they do is because Meryl did not win). Latifah only moment of worthyness was “When You’re Good to Mama” and that’s all. Jones had the best role of the musical with the most known song 2All that Jazz”, her role is one of thos lead/supporting ones but out of her competition she was best showing what an actress can do with a musical performance.September 5, 2012 at 6:27 am #539743
Catherine Z-Jones FTW!September 5, 2012 at 8:09 am #539744
Seriously? LOL… Obviously Catherine Zeta-Jones. Latifah was good, I actually really liked her in this film, but this was the CZJ show all the way. No contest.September 5, 2012 at 8:42 am #539745

I don’t hate CZJ’s win, though I still feel sorry Meryl didn’t win because “Adaptation” is imo a great movie and Meryl gave one of her best performances. Ever.
But yeah, CZJ’s role as Velma Kelly was so showy and her musical scenes simply unable to forget. Interesting that she still lost to Zellweger in the C/M Globes leading category.
And Queen Latifa was really good, but no competition to Zeta Jones. Though my favorite song from the musical Chicago is actually “Class”, the CZJ/QL duett, which was (sadly) cut from the movie.September 5, 2012 at 8:44 am #539746
Tye is right its not even close. An i too really liked Latifah in the film. But she just didn’t get enough screen time.
Vincelette might you consider doing Renee vs Catherine, it would be such a close vote. I for one would vote Renee.
An “Irish” CZJ was good but the award shouldn’t have gone to her or Meryl. Julianne Moore deserved that oscar she was on fire in The Hours.September 5, 2012 at 8:52 am #539747
I was pissed because Julianne Mooore was robbed twice that year. Don’t anyone dare to say that because CZJ were singing and dancing for a bit she was as good as Julianne Moore. Moore’s deep and heartbreaking performance in The Hours was spectacular. CZJ was fine. But Moore was much much stronger than her!September 5, 2012 at 11:05 am #539748
I LOVED Meryl Streep in “Adaptation” and Julianne Moore in “The Hours. It’s ridiculous that Julianne isn’t an Oscar winner, but I’m actually thinking that it might be a good thing Julianne hasn’t won because she is doing fine in her career without one. She’s certainly have a much better career than Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Halle Berry and countless others who have won Oscars in the last 10-15 years.
But back to the topic…Catherine Zeta-Jones freakin KILLED it in Chicago. It’s one of the most entertaining and blazing performances I’ve ever seen. She OWNS the screen everytime she’s on, and her trifecta of musical numbers: “All That Jazz”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “I Can’t Do It Alone” are outstanding. She’s up there with a bunch of Broadway veterans in CBT and owning it. Does anyone watch Renee Zellweger in that closing number?September 5, 2012 at 11:12 am #539749
I don’t think that Nicole Kidman have a bad career at all.
For example: To Die For. Moulin Rouge. The Others. The Hours. Cold Mounatin. The Interpreter. Rabbit Hole. – All of these are famous and memorable roles by her. She’s pretty underrated in Hollywood. She has three nominations when she deserved way more.September 5, 2012 at 12:49 pm #539750
Latifah didn’t even deserved a nomination, she was good, but that was all. Zeta-Jones was perfect in the role of Velma Kelly, not only was the best part of the movie, but – for me – the only right choice for the three leads (the original options with Jackman and Kidman would have been perfect).
Moore was the better between the nominees, that’s right. But her placement was fraudulent, the three women of the movie were lead. Have placed her in supporting just because she had ”Far from Heaven” was a mistake.September 5, 2012 at 1:07 pm #539751
I like Queen Latifah a lot (as an actress and a person)…but…CZJ all the way. Her performance was simply the stand out of the film.
BTW, what a great year! Chicago, The Hours, Adaption. Wowza.September 5, 2012 at 1:59 pm #539752
Well if Julianne Moore was a category cheat than CZJ as well who was co-lead with Zellweger.September 5, 2012 at 7:21 pm #539753
Zeta-Jones was a borderline supporting, imo. In the stages versions of ”Chicago”, Velma is a co-lead. But in the movie, Zeta-Jones disappears for a certain of time and the entire movie is focus on Roxie, I can buy Zeta-Jones’ performance as co-lead or supporting, but I can’t do the same with Moore, how does Kidman and Streep were lead and she was a supporting?
Streep did the same thing in that year, but in the right way. She was a lead in The Hours and could have been nominated as lead for Adaptation, but she knew that couldn’t do a campaign for supporting for ‘The Hours’, so she went with Adaptation.September 6, 2012 at 1:01 am #539754
O c’mon! LOLOL! One deserved her Oscar (and she was pregnant during the shoot, was she not?), and the other’s nomination is still a head-scratcher for me.
