Adams or Leo? Leo or Adams?August 29, 2012 at 10:06 pm #539545
Both were very good, but I thought Amy was sublime. She had the tougher role and really shined and created a fully fleshed out character from what could have been the stock girlfriend role. She wasn’t afraid to show you her character wasn’t a saint.August 29, 2012 at 11:03 pm #539546

Is this even a contest? Most certainly Amy Adams. Melissa Leo’s performance in The Fighter (as I have said multiple times on these boards before) was so beyond over-the-top and it was unbelievable that the character she was playing was based on a real person. The fact that Leo’s Oscar buzz came out of nowhere as well (She was not even advertised as being a star of the film. If you watch the theatrical trailers for the film, they only mention Wahlberg, Bale and Adams.) is just shocking. Probably overdue love for her fantastic work in Frozen River.
Adams’ performance was great in The Fighter. She was so out of her ordinary and finally expanding as an actress. She was explosive where she needed to be and calm where she needed to be. She seemed fully aware of the character she was playing and worked great with the ensemble. If one of the ladies from The Fighter had to win, it should have rightfully been her.
However, neither lady from The Fighter should have won, as that Oscar was the property of Jacki Weaver for what I consider to be the year’s greatest performance in Animal Kingdom. It was her who should have pulled off the typical supporting-category-sweep of awards season, it was her who should have had the honor of appearing on the Kodak stage with Kirk Douglas, it was her who should have received her due that year.
It was a classic case of Oscar robbery, and I think that Oscar pundits of the future will see it as an Oscar mystery.August 31, 2012 at 1:00 am #539550
I didnt find Leo overthetop in the least. And, I’ve always loved Adams in this role.
Leo could have won for Welcome to the Riley’s, a subtle yet powerhouse perf. A different character. Very different.August 31, 2012 at 1:08 am #539551
They are getting closer and closer…52%-48% now 🙂 (Let me say that the beginning Adams had 83%…)August 31, 2012 at 4:01 am #539552

^Good. I agree with those who chose Adams. I loved that she went out of her comfort zone and absolutely nailed playing a tough, take-no-shit bar chick. I thought she was excellent, and she would’ve been my winner that year.September 2, 2012 at 12:27 pm #539555
I thought Adams was fabulous here. She wiped out any reservations I’ve ever had about her. She and Mark Wahlberg, were preferable to me than Bale and Leo. But I loved all 4 of them.
I voted for Leo, because I dont think she deserves the crap she’s getting continuously for her role here, and I dont like how her person IRL and character is trashed repeatedly. So, I voted for her. I’m so glad she won.
