The ladies listed were all considered (or something like that) according to at least one of the 4 sites trivia sections: IMDB, Turner Classic Movies database, not starring . com, or wikipedia for the role of Mrs. Robinson in “The Graduate”

If Anne Bancroft had not been an option who would you have chosen regardless of the details in which they were not chosen (like scheduling conflicts, etc.)???   I found a total of 23 names associated with casting of this role. Click other if you’d like to vote for one of the following and make a comment.  The 9 listed above were chosen based on who was heavily considered as best as I could make out from the notes or whom I thought were interesting options.

    Ingrid Bergman
    Claire Bloom
    Joan Crawford
    Angie Dickinson
Jane Fonda (notes say was thought of for both Mrs. Robinson & Elaine)
    Grayson Hall
    Rita Hayworth
    Audrey Hepburn
    Jennifer Jones
    Deborah Kerr
    Eva Marie Saint
    Simone Signoret
    Lana Turner
    Shelley Winters

Not easy picturing someone other than Anne.

Went with Patricia Neal out of a plethora of possibilities all compelling to ponder.

As my name indicates, this is one of my all- time favorite
films..and i shudder to think about any other actress playing
Mrs. Robinson….ANNE BANCROFT , my favorite actress of
all time was perfect in every way….The role, and the character
are iconic because of her performance…Nobody , IMO, could
ever do it any better…or in any other way…When i saw Kathleen
Turner on broadway years back..I actually waited at the stage
door..and upon having my playbill signed by Ms. Turner…I uttered
the words…”shame on you” ..She was not pleased with me..
hahahahah.. Couldnt resist…BTW..I got free tickets..I never wouldve
paid for that travesty on Broaway…

    HAHA!!!

    Love it!!!

Reminds me of the time when I tried to get Kim Hunter’s autograph at the Tennessee Williams Literary festival in New Orleans after the Stella screaming contest.  She said she didn’t want to start all that (meaning signing autographs) My first thought was here we are outside of Jackson Square in the French Quarter and no one is even looking at you and you can’t give me an autograph?!?  I wanted to tell her Lee Grant should have won the oscar but the thought didn’t hit me until she half a block away.

Anyway, Bancroft is my favorite actress as well (along w/ Ellen Burstyn) and I of course think casting was done right here.

Despite Bancroft being my favorite actress and how legendary her performance is I can see lots of these ladies doing a great job.  Patricia Neal and Jean Simmons for starters.  I choose Angela Lansbury in the event Bancroft wouldn’t have been an option.  I can see her playing the coldness of the character and although not as sexy as Bancroft and several other ladies listed her talent could bring out the sex appeal needed.

I think Anne gave such a perfect performance, and both her and Dustin Hoffman are iconic in their roles. The fact that Bancroft was 36, but seemed much older – not in a bad way, more in a more mature, smokily-mysterious way, helped her tremendously portray the role. It would have been very interesting to see Doris Day get the role as well.

Agree. Hoffman played much younger than his years as well. Both stellar. Doris might have been an interesting choice, given that it would be such a departure from her screen persona.

Bancroft is great obviously but her casting seems such a waste when
an older screen legend could have had this iconic role instead.

    I
would love to have seen Ava Gardner do it. Her slightly blowsy late
60’s beauty and world weary air could have been perfect for the role.

    Apparently
she met with Mike Nichols about the role but he decided she wasn’t
right. Missed opportunity I think. She was a very capable actress even
though she never believed it herself.

    Hello people!

Any suggestions for further posts like these?  Taking requests.  I’ve documented all oscar nominated roles.  Will consider posting a poll on any suggestion where my notes have at least 2 performers not cast.  Some roles had a ridiculous number of names attached as someone who was considered, auditioned, screen tested, sought role, etc.

Remember if you feel so strongly about the performer actually cast and you don’t want to vote bc of it, you can consider voting for someone who would be your runner up if you were the director, producer, studio, etc.

    thanks everybody!
