I know I omitted a lot of well-known roles (In Living Color, Batman Forever, The Cable Guy, Simon Birch, Me Myself & Irene, The Majestic, Bruce Almighty, Fun with Dick and Jane, The Number 23, Horton Hears a Who!, Yes Man, A Christmas Carol, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, etc.), but I tried to narrow it down to his best-received or most iconic film roles. If you believe I did not list his best performance as one of the options in the poll (I apologize), vote “other” and specify what you think was his best.March 14, 2013 at 7:04 pm #542920
Honestly, I think Jim Carrey is an underrated actor. A lot of his comedic stuff is pure gold: The Mask and Liar Liar being the best examples.
However, his best work came from the following four films:
The Truman Show
Man on the Moon
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I Love You, Phillip Morris
There was much controversy how he got snubbed for the former two (sadly he was a longshot for “Eternal” and was egregiously not in the running for “I Love You, Phillip Morris”.
I wouldn’t give him ny vote for these had he been nominated only because I felt he had slightly better competition, for example:
-Ian McKellan would have gotten my vote in ’98
-Come to think of it, I’d consider him in ’99 for “Man on the Moon” as I am not very passionate about the work of ANY of the men who were nominated.
-Leonardo DiCaprio would get my vote in ’04.
-I do think he should have gotten nominated for Phillip Morris and he would have strongly contended for my vote along with Jeff Bridges and Colin Firth.
This is harder than I thought. I will have to think it over.March 15, 2013 at 1:30 am #542921
I went with “The Mask”. Underrated performance (no Saturn nod?) that was genious really in terms of comedy and showcasing Carrey’s skills. I will always love the movie and have it in my Top 10 of the best entertainment among motion pictures. I would even go as far as to nominate him for an Oscar (I know, the movie was too silly to properly recognize him) and he was seriously snubbed for his dramatic roles.March 15, 2013 at 5:29 am #542922
The Cable Guy. A brilliant performance in a hugely underrated film (one that gets a level of flak that I just don’t understand).March 15, 2013 at 10:15 am #542923
I voted for The Truman Show, because to me he was just pitch perfect there.
I still don’t understand how he won the DRAMA Globe and did not get nominated while the director, the screenplay and Ed Harris could??? (nothing against any of them, but it’s just such a crime!)March 15, 2013 at 4:00 pm #542924
Jim Carey is absolutely terrible in The Truman Show. The whole performance is pitched completely wrong.
He’s the only one that doesn’t know he’s on TV, so why is he the only one performing???October 23, 2013 at 4:38 am #542925
It is “The Truman Show” and in close second is “Man on the Moon”. “Majestic” should have made the list insted of “Ace Ventura”.October 23, 2013 at 5:01 am #542926
I went with The Grinch.October 23, 2013 at 9:22 am #542927
I will say “The Truman Show” simply because I love the film so much. I also like his performances in Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, Eternal Sunshine and The Cable Guy. Heck, I love all his performances! Has he ever had a bad movie? (Don’t answer that)

He’s horrible in ‘The Truman Show’.
My vote goes to ‘Dumb and Dumber’.October 23, 2013 at 8:04 pm #542929
Tough choice. I could close my eyes and throw a dart and be ok with where it lands.
Man on the Moon.

I voted for The Truman Show. Still a shame Carrey was unable to score an Oscar nomination during the peak of his career. While he could still make a comeback, I feel like his best chances were with his work in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.April 11, 2015 at 10:15 am #542931
“Ace Ventura”April 11, 2015 at 2:01 pm #542932
For me when it comes to Jim Carrey, the only way I can determine his best performance is by saying “which movie does he annoy me least in”… and it comes down to two, The Truman Show and Liar Liar, so I went with The Truman Show because I feel like it’s a better overall movie.
