Provided it gives us ‘naysayers’ everything we’ve been wanting from him, then, yes. I think he tends to go too big and grand rather than more naturalistic.October 16, 2012 at 12:42 pm #540326
althgouh many think of him as one of the greatest actors of today, i believe it’s too soon for the academy to give him a third oscar. however, is still daniel day-lewis and the academy loves him…
my prediction is still Phoenix in a great comeback role.October 16, 2012 at 1:15 pm #540327
I think it could. Lewis has been nominated 4 times for an Academy Award, all of those nominations for Best Actor, and has won twice. I think it is still too early to say who will win, Joaquin Phoenix or Lewis. Right now, my money is on Lewis. We’ll have to see if I change my bet once the critic awards start rolling in.October 16, 2012 at 1:48 pm #540328
Can he? Yes.
Will he? I think phoenix is the frontrunner at the momentOctober 17, 2012 at 12:25 am #540329
washington has been getting strong reviews but i think phoenix will have the most supportOctober 17, 2012 at 1:08 am #540330
This is going to be a tough race to predict. Joaquin Phoenix and DDL are the frontrunners, but it doesn’t mean they can necessarily win. Here are the potential Best Actor winners for next year:
- Daniel Day-Lewis wins for playing a real-life character in one of his best performances to date and makes his Oscar total a lucky 3.
- Joaquin Phoenix wins for a power-house performance in “The Master” by Paul Thomas Anderson, one the greatest living filmmakers
- Denzel Washington wins for a power-house performance in “Flight” which will also make his Oscar total 3. He will further solidify the theories that he is one of th greatest African-American actors and will receive much support and possibly a win for a film that will quite frankly be underrated. And as Tom has pointed out, alcoholics go down well with the Academy.
My best bet is that it is down to Lewis vs. Phoenix vs. Washington. I would be happy with any of these men, but I’m rooting for Day-Lewis just because There Will Be Blood has the greatest performance in film history.October 17, 2012 at 3:38 am #540331
Streep took “forever’ to win a 3rd oscar
giving great performances over the years..
DDL might give the best performance of
the year but i think PHOENIX AND HAWKES
will be the front runners..The Academy tends to
eat up roles with afflictions or characters who are
flawed…so a biography, although of our greatest
president, might not do the trick for DDL..October 17, 2012 at 12:03 pm #540332
I agree, taking merit out of it (similar to the Academy) I think Phoenix and Hawkes will come out the frontrunners.. With SO MUCH being made about crowning Streep with three last year, I find it difficult to think they will put another one in her company so soon.. Field, Lange, Washington, Day-Lewis may have to settle with two (how awful!)October 17, 2012 at 1:10 pm #540333
Joaquin Phoenix in my opninion is going to win. ( rightfully so )October 17, 2012 at 3:43 pm #540334
Could he? Absolutely he’s DDL. But i dont think he will though. Alot depends who has the momentum right before votes are to be turned in. I think John Hawkes could easily surprise people and take this years best actor oscar out from under DDL and DW. Phoenix like The Master is fading, plus polozaring opinions don’t help his chances either. He can win all the critics awards and i still don’t think he’ll win. Because critics arent the ones voting for the oscar winners.October 17, 2012 at 4:18 pm #540335
“Because critics arent the ones voting for the oscar winners. “
Thank Gawd!!!!!!! They have more than enough influence as it is.October 17, 2012 at 5:36 pm #540336
If Day-Lewis deserves a third Oscar for the performance, then he should get it.
BTW, not a fan of Joaquin Phoenix, although I did enjoy him as “Victim of Gruesome S&M Murderer” in 8MM.October 18, 2012 at 1:44 pm #540337
No, if it took Streep and Nicholson over a decade(s) to win their 3rd Oscar, what makes people think DDL will win his when he just recently won 5 years ago?
Phoenix, Hawkes, and Washington stand a better shot at winning.
