Which one of the two acclaimed TV Series is better, which one do you prefer?

I really like The Sopranos Series for it’s deep character study, but the crime parts feel fictional to me, as well as the portrayal of the mob people. They just imitated it from Films like Godfather or Goodfellas, they programmed people to think that Italian mob people act like this. On the other hand The Wire feels totally realistic, it’s great novelistic storytelling.

What are you opinions about the two Series?

The Sopranos is easily my favorite show. No series has had such an effect on modern “prestige” TV dramas. Gandolfini and Falco’s performances continue to tower over what came after. There were no “bad” seasons (though I suppose 6a is kinda close). Its final season is arguably its best. The dialogue was brilliant. The characterization was unyielding but never tired. And it managed to evolve visually, tonally and thematically throughout its run without losing what made it special from the jump. The Sopranos is also a deconstruction of mob entertainment. Only in the first season does that aspect feel like any type of an imitation. In fact, mobsters were always talking about how real those aspects were. But the show is not really about the mob. A lot of the mob stuff is a parody, a play on mob cliches. And the show typically looks to either parody or subvert those cliches. The Sopranos is more about mental health, toxic family dynamics, fragile masculinity, the meaning of “family”, growing old, and the idea of “American dream”. The mafia is used as a framework and used to intensify the stakes. But it’s not really what makes the show special. Even most of the mob drama is more about personal relationships and tensions than q a about “mob stuff”.

I love The Wire. It’s in my top five. But what keeps it from the level of The Sopranos for me is that it could sometimes feel a bit didactic (particularly in its final couple of seasons). And I just didn’t care about half of the characters in any given season. Still, a great show. But for me, TV drama is remains The Sopranos and the rest.
