When i read the question, i thought about HBC and then i thought come one they will not put her on the list cause she is too old for the role… but considering so many 30s doing teenagers… why not? 🙂

Why is this even being discussed? In her brief and wasted (pun intended) life, Winehouse had exactly one hit record (thanks to brilliant production) before she threw it all away. At best, Winehouse’s life would make a scary cautionary TV-movie afternoon special warning children against the dangers of drugs; at worst, a cheap exploitation flick that profits from Winehouse’s misery.

I take it you dislike Winehouse? Well its fair to say she herself took her life away, but her music is so sensational and her life would be very interesting to see on screen. Kinda like how they did a film on that idiot Palin.

Not that I dislike Winehouse, just that I dislike cheap biopics that exploit personal tragedies for no reason other than to profit off someone’s misery. What would be purpose of said biopic? To show that Winehouse was a troubled genius (unlikely) or just a party girl who liked to party too much (more likely)? Let her rest in peace.

As for the numerous suggestions (from others in this thread) that Helena Bonham Carter play Winehouse, let’s be real. HBC is 46 years old; Winehouse was 27 at the time of her death. Not that HBC can’t play almost anything. I have never ever seen HBC give a bad or boring performance, and that is really saying something. Her partner often casts her in mostly small roles in his movies, but she really deserves bigger, more challenging roles. I guess HBC is reason enough to go see Les Misérables, but again, not a lead role.

For someone who advocates strongly for equal rights for everyone, you are consistently a very judgemental person.

If you are talking about child abusers like Joan Crawford, then yes.

As for drug addicts like Amy Winehouse, I have sympathy–up to a point. For example, a drunk driver murdered my best friend and ex-lover–knocked my friend off his motorcycle and impaled him on a fire hydrant. Unfortunately, death was not instantaneous. Substance abusers like alcoholics often drag others down with them. But I have even less sympathy for those who exploit personal tragedies like Winehouse’s for profit.

Eva Mendas looks like her but I don’t know if she could sing. She is not the greatest actress ever but she kind of looked like her in Place Beyond the Pines

    Helena Bonham Carter.

And I’m not a fan of her at all.

Gaga has the face to play the part, she has proven to be a capable actress and can pull this off.

I do not see Carter as Winehouse at all.   She is too old for the part to the point that it would be distracting.   Not sure why you’d consider casting a woman in her late 40’s to play a women in her mid-20’s.   Sure, I suppose it happens often, but I just would not see it working here at all.

I didn’t realize it until this year’s Oscars – and I can’t believe no one has beat me to it – but based on resemblance alone [plus us knowing she is a legit actress], I say hands down SALLY HAWKINS

That is actually a good choice.   Probably better than the choices given above and certainly more reasonable than Carter.
