I don’t know if there is already a poll about this but… I have always been curious how close she has been.August 31, 2014 at 9:12 am #549226
I have to believe she was right on Cher for Fatal Attraction. Outside of Damages, it is my favorite Glenn Close performance.
I know Albert Nobbs was sort of a dud; however, had it held off a year, I’m almost certain Close would have won over Jennifer Lawrence (bumping Riva or most likely Watts out of the nom). No way would they have snubbed her a sixth time in favor of a borderline supporting performance from such a relative newcomer. Yet, had that happened, Lawrence would have most definitely trumped Lupita Nyong’o. Funny how timing works into the politics of Oscar voting.
It took Geraldine Page eight tries. I’m optimistic Close will have the same fate.August 31, 2014 at 9:37 am #549227
My favorite close performance was Albert Nobbs…… but sadly she didn’t even come close to winning. I would say she came closest for Dangerous Liaisons.August 31, 2014 at 11:42 am #549228
She won LAFCA and came in 2nd at NSFC and NYFCC for The World According to Garp, so it seems like she was certainly a contender for that one but lost steam as the season went on.August 31, 2014 at 6:16 pm #549229
I think her closest were probably Fatal Attraction and World According to Garp. Fatal had a ton of buzz, made a lot of money, and Close had so much range in her performance. Cher was such a big star and her character was so likable, so it makes sense why she lost that one. Jessica Lange’s win for Tootsie has had mixed reactions. Some feel that she deserved it, while others think she won because she was so good in “Frances” but had to face Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice. I like to think Glenn would have won if all of that drama didn’t happen.August 31, 2014 at 6:21 pm #549230
The World According to Garp or Dangerous Liaisons.

With her critics wins for The World According to Garp, I would say that she was very much in the running but she split the major awards with Jessica Lange so I think the stars aligned in more ways than one for Lange to take it.
I know she had some people predicting her for Fatal Attraction but looking back, she didn’t win any precursors so it doesn’t seem too shocking.
Then again, she won nothing for Dangerous Liasions and yet, that was the time people expected her to triumph because she was so overdue and there wasn’t really a major frontrunner as there was a three-way tie at the Globes and critic award winners like Christine Lahti and Judy Davis were snubbed and there didn’t seem to be a huge surge to give Meryl Streep a 3rd Oscar yet despite winning NY Film Critics and honestly giving some of her best work.
It did seem like a prime opportunity to give it to Glenn Close and it made sense as she was overdue and giving one of her best performances in a movie that seemed to perform beyond expectations at the Oscars that year.
And then enter Jodie Foster, part of the 3-way Golden Globe tie.
So, I’d vote Dangerous Liasions.March 4, 2015 at 7:58 am #549232
I watched The World According to Garp last night and wow Close should have won! Lange won probably with a boost from Frances that same nightMarch 5, 2015 at 2:28 pm #549233
Fatal AttractionMarch 7, 2015 at 2:50 pm #549234
Fatal Attraction. I think that was probably her best shot.
I think that for The Big Chill, she was probably a close third. I think that Cher was probably right after Hunt, followed by Close.
