ABC is bringing “American Idol” back in the winter of 2020 but the judges (Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie) may not return.
Will you still watch?May 20, 2019 at 2:21 pm #1202901950
I’m still watching (super fan). I think Lionel is gonna stick around and so is Luke. Katy….that could go either way and tbh I feel like there are probably better judging choices out there if she were to leave. Not that I don’t like her but it seems like they pay her a lot for just being not as constructive as the others in terms of criticism.May 20, 2019 at 9:28 pm #1202902518
I will watch American Idol until long after I am dead and buried (I plan to have a television in my casket).
Their changing the premiere date back to the O.G. January delights me, and leads me to think that they may be changing their formula making it more akin to the FOX formula, which I dig. One of the things I wanted for the last two seasons was to have American vote after the Top 24 like they are supposed to and not after Top 12 which makes no real sense and has no real point in having a Top 24 if America doesn’t vote.
If I were a betting man, I would say that Lionel will be the only judge who will survive for next year. Katy seems a bit egotistical and probably costs too much and Luke is just completely useless TBH. If they really want to return Idol to their roots, they should bring back one of the O.G. judges. Simon is far too busy, but I don’t think Randy or Paula are doing anything lately. Man, it would be so awesome to have the dawg back on Idol! I also hope that there is a “voice of reason” judge, maybe not necessarily “mean” or “brutally honest” judge like Simon, but someone who occasionally gave constructive criticism. Someone like Harry Connick, Jr. in Season 13-15. Heck, bring him back!
Ryan Seacrest should be the host until he dies. I don’t want anyone else to host the show! Bobby Bones stepping in for that one episode does worry me, but I don’t think anything will come of it.
This news for Season 18 does have me cautiously optimistic for Idol. They are still pretty consistent with the ratings (even beating out The Voice on a couple of nights), so I think that this shakeup could make or break Idol. As long as they don’t have a Nicki/Mariah fiasco like in Season 12, then I think they will be fine.

I’ve been thinking…
Adam Levine leaving The Voice could mean that Idol has the potential to snap him up for a judge.

Obviously the show got even less popular and they can’t afford Katy’s salary. Which makes sense, since I don’t know how they managed to afford these last two seasons either.
I think Lionel and Luke will stay since they need this, Katy doesn’t. I agree that they could/should bring somebody back like Randy or Harry. However 3 male judges is not a good look…so get rid of Luke, obviously.May 25, 2019 at 12:53 pm #1202910476
Heaven forbid having three male judges!!
There is no rules against it so I would be fine with it. It has nothing to do with sexism, it’s just that a lot of the female judges have been subpar outside of Paula.
That being said, Adam Levine is out of The Voice and JHud is gone from The Voice UK, so they could be up for grabs for Idol if they really wanted them back.

Well, it would be a PR mess. I don’t care either, but it’s 2019 and we can’t pretend like it won’t be a problem and a news story to have 3 male judges.
Adam Levine did not leave The Voice to come join this sinking ship that probably cannot afford him anyway. It’s like being a star on Big Bang for 16 seasons, quitting and joining, I don’t know, Two and a Half Men. Why?
Jennifer Hudson is another story. And it does make sense for this.
