Episode Title: “High Fashion to High Street”

Synopsis: The remaining designers visit the atelier of the legendary Dapper Dan; Dap is the trailblazer who introduced high fashion to the hip-hop world by creating luxury streetwear; their challenge is to create their own take on the future of streetwear in just one day to complete and impress a fashion legend; another contestant is eliminated from the competition.

This challenge was horrid! 12 hours to create a look. That’s not a lot of time. In the end the designs looked like something left over from a parade in Seattle.

Too bad they couldn’t send the entire bottom 3 home this week. All of them sucked.

There were a lot of questionable looks this week, but I did agree with the judges in their choice of winner and bottom three. It really seemed like the judges wanted to cut all three of the bottom three designers and really didn’t want to have to talk about them at all. Kovid was the right choice, though. His time was up last week. Bishme’s look was great, especially the jacket, and I’m glad he finally got a win. His whole dynamic with Tessa was fun to watch.

This should have been a double elimination week. Jamall’s look wasn’t even finished and just inept in both construction and execution. I haven’t liked or followed Kovid’s aesthetics from the beginning, and he annoys the living fuck out of me, so good riddance. Rakan can go home at any time as well for his boring genie-in-a-bottle clothes. Thrilled for Bishme! He really wanted this win, and he had the coolest girl on the runway anyways. I would have easily had Hester’s look there over Venny’s. That was my clear number two choice. Garo’s corseted design was kinda sick too … not mad that he was in the top three. Interesting challenge this week. I’m not into streetwear personally, nor did I have a notion of who “Dapper Dan” was, but the designers seemed very engaged this week. It’s too bad that they were so rushed. That was readily apparent in design after design. Venny meeting his idol was special for him, which I like seeing reflected in reality shows like this. One thing that’s quite disappointing me is Christian Siriano’s lackadaisical approach to mentoring the cast this season. The designers clearly need a strong hand, and they would have never talked to Tim Gunn the way they do with Christian. I think he wants to be their “friend” or something, and that’s not what a mentor is about. Age is a big factor here too. Tim just has a gravitas that comes with age and experience that even a former winner (the best winner “Project Runway” has ever anointed) just doesn’t have.

Rakan leaving was absolutely fine and overdue. Jamall can leave next week, and Vinny the week after. They aren’t at the level of the remaining designers, and now their slips are showing. Thrilled for Hester’s second win! She’s emerging with a winner’s narrative, and is also just the kind of face winner that TPTB would want for the reboot franchise. Creative challenge idea with the video game heroines. I pretty much knew exactly who would make clichéd dominatrix outfits and businesswomen in men’s suits. But some were genuinely inspired creations celebrating strong, kickass women without sexualizing them. Bravo is really going all out with this version of “Project Runway”! Exceptional production values, inventive challenges, and a diverse cast of emerging designers! Still have issues with a mostly dull judging panel beyond Queen Nina Garcia, a vapid host that’s no Heidi Klum whatsoever, and an over-it.com mentor with Christian Siriano. Oh wells. Nothing’s perfect.

What a fun challenge this week! Some of the looks were really great and cool, and others were pretty eye-rolling. Rakan’s and Jamall’s looks felt doomed from the start. Venny’s look started out middling but then he leaned into the terrible. When Garo described his editor/dominatrix character, I knew I’d dislike the look and I knew the judges would go for it. Oh well. I think Tessa really deserved this win, as her look as really inventive but also was something I could totally see being in a video game. I didn’t care for Hester’s look (she lost me at ‘sexy cargo pants,’ which do not exist), but I can see why the judges did.

It totally seems like there’s a bottom level of contestants who need to be eliminated before the others should have to worry about it.

There’s probably still potential for Christian to be better as the mentor for the group, even though it’s not working right now. Karlie really just doesn’t have a personality suited to hosting this show. Maybe I’d think she did if we didn’t have Heidi doing it for so long, but it feels like we’re sorely missing the charisma and the quirk.
