Ahhhh. I didn’t start watching “Project Runway” until season 4, which was Christian Siriano’s year (still the best winner this show’s ever had and will have). So there’s no excuses for the producers not seeing what was going on when it was happening in the living quarters, even if it’s only B-roll footage. This was clearly tabled at the time of events to unfold in the loudest way possible later for the best reality television possible. Nothing surprising, yet incredibly tacky.October 18, 2017 at 11:18 am #1202241742

I do remember that season with the guy with the pattern-making book in the room, and him being around for a while before being eliminated. I guess the producers don’t feel its their job to be on the lookout for these things, and the only people who can really police the designers are other designers and Tim Gunn.
He won the first challenge, was seen as a frontrunner and would’ve won another challenge but it included a stupid twist where you had to dress a model but also make an outfit for a dog. He didn’t want to do the dog outfit and was out of the running for what I think would’ve been his second consecutive win. I think the book thing happened in week 3 and he was out.October 19, 2017 at 2:15 pm #1202242638
Episode Title: “Driving Miss Unconventional”

Very sad about Mychael Knight. I remember really enjoying him on the show.
This week’s unconventional episode was pretty fun. It’s kind of nice to be done with all the drama and just have an episode where the drama is about what these guys will do with these seat belts and traffic cones.
Kudos to Ayana for a truly fantastic look this week. She should have won last week and then scorched the competition with a look this week that was just so much awesome. I also liked Brandon’s and Margarita’s looks a lot. Margarita’s looked like cool body armor, and Brandon’s looked impressively wearable.
Both Michael’s and Kentaro’s looks were pretty bad. Michael’s was clearly too much all the way through the episode, but Kentaro’s seemed fine until the very end, when it became terrible, with terrible styling to match. I’m glad he didn’t get eliminate, but I did think his look was the worst overall. I’m fine with Michael going, though. He should have known better than to do what he was doing from the get-go.
This also presented some interesting changes in terms of who’s high or low as we approach Fashion Week. Kentaro seemed like the top dog, but his look this week was shockingly bad. On the other hand, I hadn’t thought much of Ayana’s changes, but the last two challenges make her look like a designer with a unique point of view who figured out how to combined her modest aesthetic with the level of drama and showmanship required for a runway show, something that strong competitors like Brandon and Kenya routinely lack. I guess Brandon is still a frontrunner, but he seems to struggle more and more every week. Though, I think next week’s challenge of designing something inspired by women warriors will work for him as well as anyone.October 20, 2017 at 9:12 pm #1202243793
Glad that Ayana got this one. She deserved to win last week too, so this is nice. She did the most work here and it looked crazy but great.
My favorite was Brandon’s though, so many great things on it. It looked so good with the orange patches and the excellent skirt that I didn’t mind the token hanging strips which were extremely unnecessary (as usual).
Margarita’s look was awful for about 80% of the episode, but once it hit the runway and then the up close critique it looked great. She fixed many things along the way. The whole thing worked.
I didn’t get the praise for Kenya’s look at all. It made it even more obvious that she’s the next one to go. Nice idea, but everytime they showed it I hated it more. The seatbelt as the belt, the weird hips, one side being so much higher than the other (not on purpose at all), the hat, the opening on the top was not on the right place. Not a fan.
Michael spent way too much time figuring out what to do for the base of the dress that it ruined him. She looked like a hooker. And Kentaro’s look was for me the worst. Pocahontas inspired, the awful color placement, the hair, the shoes. But nothing was worse than motherfucking Liris needing to say something and get a few lines in there AGAIN!.
Disappointed that Tim didn’t save Michael. He would’ve saved Kentaro for sure. I thought Kenya would be the only one to go without the save from this group, but now that I think about it, she’s so likeable that she could’ve gotten the save just for that.
Final three is looking like a Brandon, Kentaro and Ayana situation. Kenya is obviously not going and Margarita is exactly the type of designer that you never know and have to wait and see. She could totally screw up at any point and she got the token “I don’t know who you are” line thrown in there too so they can take points away from her for fashion week in advance.
On the other hand, Kentaro was the token designer who used fabric as fabric and didn’t get called out for it. Just to show you who their favorites are for fashion week.
Brandon seems like the only lock, since Kentaro can apparently screw up easily too.
Finally, I saw the Gretchen/Mondo season on Netflix, I wish the “take an item from another designer” challenge was in this season too so somebody can take Kenya’s scarf. I can’t believe she hasn’t taken that thing off in like 10 episodes.October 23, 2017 at 12:41 am #1202245529
Somewhat surprised that Tim Gunn didn’t use his save on Michael, or that it’s taken this long for him to use it. He very well might not use it this season, and it should be null and void by top five anyways like it was for “American Idol.” Miss Michael said that the save shouldn’t be used at this point and that the remaining designers should just “innovate” more, so good riddance to him! Margarita making the top five is pretty gross, but whatever. The top three now are clearly Kentaro, Brandon, and rising just when it’s most necessary to do so, Ayana. She’s rocked it for two straight challenges now, so congrats to her! Between Margarita and Kenya, I would have said Kenya easily if there’s a top four, but who knows really? Now I feel like it’s anyone’s race to lose, which I wouldn’t have said even last week. I think Kentaro could do a great deal in six weeks time. Same for Ayana if she continues to break out of her modesty shell. Brandon’s stuck in the same feminine-masculine mode/silhouettes for weeks now, but the judges adore him. Can’t get a read on Kenya or Margarita yet with their overall aesthetics. One week they’re strong, then they falter, and then they rise again. Frustrating for predicting purposes, but we’ll find out what happens soon enough.October 23, 2017 at 9:44 am #1202246013
They are really tough to predict. I think that, to the judges, Kenya seems interesting to them in a way that Margarita does not. They seem to give her more credit for things than I would expect, and her personality goes a long way. Most of Kenya’s faltering has at least come with being hampered by something or other, like unconventional materials or working with a partner. Margarita’s very worst look was the challenge where she seemed to be enjoying herself the most and doing the most of what she wanted, the model challenge where she made that terrible, dated look and then blamed it on Christina. That makes me think her collection would be her having six weeks to make a lot of bad decisions, but she may make enough bad decisions before that not to get the chance. Hard to say.
In theory, I would have expected Tim to use the save by now, but in practice, I can absolutely see what he wouldn’t have. The crux of it is that he’d have to actually disagree with the judges’ decision, and I don’t think he has yet. In this case, I’m sure he didn’t. I don’t know how much longer the save is even effective, but considering that the save was invented because Tim beseeched the judges to give Michelle another chance when they eliminated her in going from five to four in Season 11, and she eventually won the season, it should go until the final four.October 23, 2017 at 9:45 am #1202246015
Ayana was giving me life with that dress …. it was everything . I love wearable arts, i have competed in wearable arts fashion shows in the past and made garments and i love it when they have to think outside the box and create things that are truly unique
I think top three are brandon, kentaro and Ayana … who knows with the other two …

Ugh, what a waste of the Tim Gunn save on a damn Wonder Woman costume! That’s what he goes to bat against the judges for? I thought Kentaro would be eliminated tonight instead, and the save would be automatic on one of TPTB’s anointed ones. But he’s been off his game for weeks now, so maybe that’s all being called into question. Hard to picture Margarita make it to Fashion Week with no discernible “point of view.” I can barely picture what a collection of hers would look like, and I can for all the rest of them. I think that four will make it to Fashion Week as been the trend in recent seasons. Or three designers and the remaining two make mini-collections to compete for that last slot. This show ploy seems perfect for Kenya and Margarita. I actually would have picked Kenya to win this challenge. Liris was absolutely stunning, bitches! Brandon’s entering boring territory for me with his aesthetics. Anyone with two eyes can see exactly what his runway style will be like. I’m glad something was made of how similar Kentaro’s look was to Brandon’s. Too bad that Kentaro was so stuck with his model’s plus-sized measurements. Didn’t think that would still be an issue this late into the season. Besides not being into Margarita’s costume, I wasn’t feeling Ayana’s busy look all that much either. Cool striped pants, but no to that puffy shirt that looked like a cross from the infamous “Seinfeld” episode and an old “Purple Rain” outfit of Prince’s. Anyways, top three of Brandon (resurging right when it counts), Ayana (young woman with many diversity boxes checked off), and Kentaro (most conceptual designer of the lot who can shock the most in a full collection). Beyond that, I don’t know who stays between Kenya and Margarita. Kenya would have been an easy answer a couple weeks ago, but now that Margarita has Tim Gunn in her corner, that changes the deal somewhat. Here we go!October 28, 2017 at 2:49 pm #1202342541
I think Tim using the save this week was a guarantee no matter who was eliminated. I also think that time felt responsible in part for this look due to his positive reaction to her garment during their critiques. I think they all the looks were good and there really were not any that were “bad” I didn’t love the gold on top of the red but I did like the idea and the corset was actually quite cute. I think Kentaro and Brandon are starting to get stale with their cold, layered looks with minimal colors and straps. I think they will both make the finale but I think whom ever can push themselves the furthest will win. I think Kenya and Ayana fucking killed it this week. Kenya should have won her dress was stunning on Liris and would be great for any body size. I think brandon won for having a more editorial look. I think Ayana has been delivering , she took her modest ideas and made something more mainstream and was able to make a sexy strong look. Over all really good designs and I think anyone can move on. I think the win is between Ayana and Brandon at this point with Kentaro in Third.

This has definitely been the season of “well, it took you long enough to notice…”. Now, NOW is the time when Nina decides to say something about Brandon and Kentaro? This has been going on for weeks. They already missed everything about the twins, I suppose they’ll wait until after the final runway to say “Can I just ask something, why does your outfit need those straps?”.
I mean Nina went for Kentaro’s straps on the neck. What the hell are Brandon’s strap for Nina???
Brandon winning this challenge is a huge question mark. While I can totally see Brandon’s runways as always being “fashion” and not just a tired dress with something different on the shoulders to make it seem like a new thing or “fashion”, the whole thing has turned into a been there
done that situation. And in the end, this eventual winner (this week showed that Ayana might not be able to stop him) has already shown his final runway during Fashion Week every single week. There will be no surprise. It will have only two colors per garment, it will have “poopy pants”, it will be masculine and will have motherfucking straps. People hate Anya’s win because she ended up with wrap dresses or whatever, or Erin because it was all cooky and hipster. What else is Brandon going to bring? “Fashion”, but fashion we’ve already seen. Just like this challenge which was won by an outfit that has already won twice before.
As for Kentaro. He’s in a worse position. This week was awful. There was nothing to see there. You actually couldn’t see anything there. And after last week and his clear influence by Brandon’s designs, it means he’s only going to make it to fashion week because Margarita and Kenya will let him get there. He’s great. But he lost it. Of course during the six week break without Brandon there, he could do something great, but who knows.
Ayana deserved this win too. That’s two times she’s been robbed now after the avant garde challenge. She’s now 100% locked for fashion week.
Margarita’s dress was a mess. But even during the close up critique Tim asked “is it really that awful?”. He felt responsible, the save made sense and it was easy to predict. And the show also needs the token drama for the finale and will it be 3-4-5 people, double eliminations, go home and come back with the 13th look and compete and all that crap. Having 5 people for next week helps.
I liked Kenya’s look, Liris (mirror mirror on the wall…) looked great. But I would actually put Brandon on top of her this week regardless of what I said above.
