I’m glad that all four ladies get to know at Fashion Week. Watching this episode, I feel bad that I’ve been so ready for Coral to be eliminated for weeks now. None of her pieces have been my favorite, but they’ve mostly been interesting, and she does feel like she has a strong signature and a point of view. Kristina did a great job this week of representing what her brand is (both with her look and her pitch to the judges), and if I were coming into the challenge not having seen her prior work, I think I would have really loved it. At this point, though, I feel like she’s been doing too much of the same thing throughout the competition, it was the look that impressed me least. Chasity’s look was pretty stunning and represented her general aesthetic well. Of everyone, her look was the least “what’s next” out of everyone, but still I liked it. Shantall was my favorite going in, and I liked her idea a lot. The finished product was a bit of a disappointment for me, but still it was interesting and cool. Very excited to see what these four bring for the finale.

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 5, 2022 at 5:56 pm #1204777565Shantall deservedly won, although Coral was my favorite final collection. The former won for a strong collection and a consistently outstanding season (4 deserved wins!). The latter probably missed out, despite the standing ovation, for not having won enough throughout the season.
Shantall delivered a intricate and technically interesting set of clothes, although her styling was atrocious. Those earrings!!! The belt!!! Snake Dynasty realness!!! Coral was the most artistic and emotionally gratifying, at least for me, as I am indigenous looking with Mexican roots. Her final jacket with the headdress was everything! Chasity’s collection was better than expected, but she needed more variety. A few street wear looks would have diversified her overall impact and made her more marketable, although those pants were hideous. I agree about her having a future with entertainers like Beyoncé, Rihanna, JLo and Ariana Grande. Kristina was a disappointment, the clothing was highly inconsistent and her perspective was too narrow. Prints! See through blouses! The hoverboard was impactful but it didn’t save the collection from its overall messiness. I honestly enjoyed the season and did not miss having a model host, Siriano basically performed both duties with an entertaining ease. Great season!

The lackluster collections from all of them pretty much meant there was no suspense during the finale. At some point it seemed like Coral could overcome her no challenge wins since it was mentioned several times and her collection was the overall best, even if we’ve seen all of it from her before.
I think this was easily the worst finale the show has ever had thanks to Kristina’s mess of a collection, Chastity’s terrible formal wedding/event all black ruffle collection with that terrible blue color there for no reason, Coral’s repetitiveness and Shantall’s meh collection (great work, some great pieces, awful styling, and not as impressed as I was during the season).
Great season, terrible final collections. Deserved winner.
First Siriano Save winner. Did anybody with with the Tim Save? Why do I think it’s Michelle during the teams season? Was it even in play back then?
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 7, 2022 at 1:49 pm #1204783119Loved the new venue for the finale. Sort of covid-friendly, I guess, but still felt like too many people were stuffed in there and not spaced apart enough. Shontall’s collection was decent, but not my favorite of the finalists. I found her designs both boxy and dated-looking, dull color story, and bizarre styling choices (I still can’t unsee those clunky square earrings used for the models straight out of “Dynasty” circa-1983). It seemed like a heavy emphasis in the “art vs. commerce” debate I mentioned earlier was solely on what would sell in the marketplace the best, who had a “trademark” look that could be exploited year after year. That most favored Shontall and Coral out of the four. Coral never winning a challenge was to her detriment, and some might say that four challenge wins + the first-ever Christian Siriano save to win outright was too much to pass up with Shontall. Tommy Hilfiger had a huge influence on the winner, it seems. I have to wonder how Elaine would have swayed the decision-making process had she been there. I think she would have made a compelling case for Chasity, whose aesthetics seemed to most match her personal style. Kinda disappointed that Chasity went into the expected evening-wear to stage-wear ready lane as much as she did. Super-lucrative lane to be in, but that almost feels more costume designer-level to me. Coral’s macramé looks were great, and her finale showstopper was the best of the night (fully earned her standing ovation; hope that was for her alone and not just for the end of the show). I have to go back to what Nina said from a few weeks ago when she was like, how many macramé dresses will women really want after buying the first one? To my great surprise, considering that she’s one of my least-favorite ever “Project Runway” contestants, Kristina’s collection was my favorite of the four. I gasped at the inventiveness and beauty of her collection and was genuinely hoping for an upset win. It felt disingenuous to me when Hilfiger said that her prints would be dated after one year and women wouldn’t want to buy them multiple times, like Kristina doesn’t have the capacity to craft different prints and different designs for future runways and store brands. Did all prints stop Anya from winning her season? Nope. The hoverboard stunt at the end worked well, but it wasn’t really necessary. The clothes more than spoke for themselves otherwise. My rankings were Kristina > Coral > Shontall > Chasity. Great season with a strong batch of personalities and inventive challenges. Siriano has finally come into his own as mentor. He’ll never carry the Tim Gunn gravitas, but he makes up for that with his dishy persona. It looks like he truly cares about the outcomes for these designers, and his sense of empathy is showing more than it did in previous seasons. Still needs a host though. #SorryNotSorry. The Heidi Klum vacuum is palpable. Karlie Kloss ain’t it, but there’s no reason why an elder supermodel of note can’t do a show like this. Where’s Cindy Crawford? What’s Elle MacPherson up to these days? I know Naomi Campbell has her baby now, but she’s not on “Making the Cut” anymore. I’d gaggg if Kate Moss signed up to host the show’s iconic 20th season! If Klum can do it, then any of these bitches can too! I’d also love to see Siriano do a “Last Chance Runway” web series, in addition to his season save. Satisfying all-female finale. Ready for S20!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2022 at 4:55 pm #1204790373It was a good end to a strong season. Probably because I find a lot of runway fashion to be a little much for me, I didn’t dislike any of the collections. I do feel like Chasity had a lot of looks that were nice, but nothing felt revolutionary. I was very surprised how much I like Coral’s collection, which had a few of my favorite pieces. Watching Kristina’s collection, I was loving it. But by the time we had gotten to the end, I felt like I was watching a computer screensaver from the late 90s. So when Tommy Hilfiger talked about the print not really being sellable season after season (less any print and more this style of print), it really hit for me. To his point, Shantall’s snake-like motif could become a real signature for her, something that really establishes her brand and is incorporated season over season. I liked her collection more in theory than I did in reality, but I was still very glad she won. I’d buy a slightly stiff, slightly oversized sweater with that design on the sleeve.
I was low-key devastated that Elaine wasn’t able to be at the finale. I could see her having pitched more of a case for Chasity and for Coral, which might not have mattered in the end with the panel seemingly coming down to Kristina or Shantall, but I still would have liked the perspective. Christian seems to have really settled into his role well, and considering that the winner only stayed in the competition because of his save, he’s obviously making his mark. I do still miss having a host, though. I like the consistency of the same person introducing the challenges and delivering the results at the end of the episode, and I also like consistently having a person on the panel whose qualifications are just the experience of wearing a lot of fashion. I miss Heidi on the panel as much as anywhere.
