The series premiere of “Songland” aired last night on NBC, and I generally liked it. The premise is seeing the nuts and bolts of the songwriting process in this new, souped up format. Each week, an established artist hears original song content from budding songwriters with the best producers in the music business. Three songs are chosen to be reworked into finalists for the artist, one song is chosen the winner, and the song then immediately goes to iTunes. John Legend started it off, and this season, it looks like we’re also getting the Jonas Bros., Aloe Blocc, Meghan Trainor, Will.I.Am, Macklemore, Leona Lewis, etc. The producers were Ryan Tedder, Shawn McAnally, and Ester Dean. I’m guessing that changes from episode to episode.
John’s final choice was unexpected. Tebby’s song really did go through an evolution to get to the acoustic end stage, so yay Shane! Ollie’s song was custom-made for R&B, so that might have been too obvious of a choice from Ester. Ryan completely changed his poor guy’s song to the point that it was just a cheap One Republic knock-off. Changed the title, sped up the lyrics, rewrote entire verses, etc. That’s probably true-to-life for the industry, but sad all the same. I think I might stick with this for awhile and see where it goes. Likely no true “hits” emerge from Billboard with songs like “Thotiana” and “Old Town Road” in the world today, but who knows? “The Voice” isn’t about producing stars at this point (or ever) either, but the spectacle of the overpaid coaches.

Ollie’s song was easily the best in my opinion……Alicia Keys maybe?June 4, 2019 at 9:40 am #1202923243
New episode airs tonight @ 10 PM ET on NBC featuring will.i.am.June 4, 2019 at 8:21 pm #1202923882
That was kinda awesome. Will.I.Am. jumped in with all three of these songwriters to produce new visions of already standout material to BEP-sounding songs. “Be Nice” was the one I would have chosen too, though the songwriter was a goon. Having all three songs on the new album is crazy! Sort of like a three-way tie, which normally I’d call out as a lame copout. “Boxes” and “Invincible” also sound very BEP in their new iterations. I wonder where Fergie was in that video at the end? Hmmmm. Looks like these producers are sticking around for the entire season.June 5, 2019 at 10:04 am #1202924551
Will.I.Am is amazing. I loved all three and was sad that two wouldnt be picked and thank goodness he saw that they were all great.June 11, 2019 at 5:07 pm #1202933614
Kelsea Ballerini is the featured artist tonight.June 11, 2019 at 9:21 pm #1202933921
Kelsea’s amazing and picked the best song out of the three finalists. It’s the true class of the lineup, as well as the representation statement of the songwriter of a popular country artist is a young black guy from Philly. And finally Ryan has a win in his corner lol. Shane could have easily taken this round given their prior relationship and country industry connections. It also helped that the winner clearly idolized Tedder, which, um, choices lol. We can’t help who we idolize, I guess. This series has really won me over! Jonas Bros. next week!June 12, 2019 at 9:08 am #1202934535
I think Kelsea chose the best song but the other two would be perfect for Katy Perry (the other song) and bieber (the beiber lookalike song lol).June 18, 2019 at 12:28 pm #1202943058
The Jonas Bros are the featured artists in tonight’s episode.June 19, 2019 at 8:17 am #1202944132
All great songs but I think they went with the right one. Fits them perfectly.June 20, 2019 at 7:03 am #1202945393
This time, I think a better song could have been chosen. “Greenlight” is fine, but I feel like I could hear something like that anywhere on radio right now. Since the Jonas Bros have been away for some time, they don’t really have an identifiable “sound” yet past their teeny-bopper years. “Sucker” and “Cool” are fantastic songs though. This sort of song lands outside of those songs to me. “Crowded Places” feels more in line with where their newer sound is going. At the same time, of the three songwriters presented, Abel Heart was the clear standout with obvious star quality. I also can tell an addict from a mile away, so I wanted to hear more about his struggles and empathize with them. That’s far deeper than this G-rated reality series is willing to go, so whatever. I hope these songwriters aren’t solely failed artists/industry plants like I’ve been reading but real struggling singer/songwriters looking for that big “break” in the industry. Otherwise, the premise loses so much of its great hook. And Nick Jonas is the real deal, wow! Who knew?June 20, 2019 at 7:26 am #1202945435
And Nick Jonas is the real deal, wow! Who knew?
I always thought he would be the one to breakout as a solo artist way back when since he has the best voice. Not that Joe doesn’t…..I mean he is probably the most down to Earth out of the two that did their own thing musically but would be the one I feel like would be a lot of fun to hang out with lolJune 20, 2019 at 7:27 am #1202945437
Megan Trainer next week…….interesting since I thought she was a judge on the show on Fox so maybe she actually wants some radio airplay again 🙂June 25, 2019 at 7:37 am #1202950927
Meghan Trainor is the featured artist in tonight’s episode.June 25, 2019 at 8:09 pm #1202951930
The moment “Hurt Me” came out of Cole’s mouth, I knew the other songs didn’t have a chance. It was the most “Meghan”-sounding, and being the only female perspective certainly helped. I do think this could have been an opportunity for her to try for something edgier and darker, but go for what you know, I guess. Can’t deviate all that much when aiming at mainstream pop acceptance. None of these songs were particularly edgy anyways. Regardless, three great songs for this episode!
