Aaand we have our first two finalists! Sorry to see The Young Cast go. They tried so hard and went through every hurdle that this show placed in front of them. I think large dance groups can thrill an audience in a way that no others can, so that might not have been a wise decision. Fairly underwhelmed with the Latin duo, and they received the best score of the night. Kinda glad they gracefully let Savannah go. The judges were placating her somewhat, and I don’t think that does children any good in the long run. GVRMNT was solid, but they’ve done better routines. The contemporary dancer dude was all over the place in his routine. Geometry continues to astound the judges. They really might go all the way, which is a bit surprising. A bit “too cool for school” for my tastes, but the talent is obviously there.

After that performance, I knew the young cast would be out…..honestly that entire episode was so tight scorewise. Also can we tell neyo there are other numbers than 89 lol

Finale is tonight! Not next week. Set DVRs accordingly.

Felt bad for Bailey & Kida. They’ve been told that their the best thing since sliced bread, and only missed the cutoff by tenths of a point. Stinging! They can always come back, but still. Who’s to say when or if this series returns? Odds are on Oxygen to win. Large groups have a key advantage here over the solos, duos, and trios. They continue to surprise, though I was also impressed with the last trio. J-Lo was crying at the end, and I severely underestimated them. Not too enthused with the Latin group or the cocky French Geometry guys. I would have liked seeing The Young Cast, GRVMNT, UPeepz, The Rise, or K&B still standing, but whatever. A winner will be crowned tonight!

That’s that! This finale really should have aired next week to let the momentum build up, but I see why NBC did this b/c of the Democratic Convention. Absolutely no reason why this couldn’t have aired in an earlier time slot next Wednesday instead of a repeat of “Ellen’s Game of Games,” but whatever. Cheers to MDC 3! Never would I have picked this trio to win the grand prize when I first saw them perform. I thought this was Oxygen’s race to lose, but going first was the death knell for them. The judges always hold back the high scores for the first acts. This also wasn’t their best effort, sadly. The Latin group was fine, but just not one of my favorites. Geometry had the money slot and looked poised to win with the laser show effects and extended backstory. I wonder what held the judges back? Maybe the “boutique” style of dancing as Ne-yo put it would have caused criticism as the winner? J-Lo said a similar thing about how she couldn’t believe a group like Oxygen made it to the finale. That’s exactly the kind of dance group that should be on a show like this and competing for the title. MDC 3 did an emotional routine, but it wasn’t undeniable. I guess it’s nice to see a Junior Act win this. It should have been two Junior acts and two Upper acts competing for parity. I didn’t like one group being eliminated before the other. This should have been a celebration of all four acts, not just two. Also sad not having a studio audience for this. Thx, covid! Frontloaded season with all of those qualifiers, duels, and new Redemption rounds, only to rush through the Semifinals and Finals. Underwhelming finale on all fronts, but this money will change these young kids’ lives forever, so that I like seeing, at least. Hope this dance competition series can return one day soon!

A consolation prize for Jefferson & Adrianita–they’re both Emmy nominees in Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming! It looks like they’re in for both of their routines in the Qualifiers and Duels. I’m somewhat suspicious of the latter, since that aired way outside of what should have been the qualifiying deadline for Emmy contenders this cycle, if I’m reading the revised Emmy calendar correctly. It never occurred to me that this season could be eligible, since it started so late (5/26/20), and the current season wouldn’t conclude until August. There’s no Choreography ballot to reference either. This is a big deal! I should have registered all of this before now. The show won this category last year BTW, so watch out.

That catagory is a tight race between them and Al Blackstone (Not ruling out Travis but honestly he annoys me and I still can’t pinpoint why after all these years.)

Remember that Choreography (well, now it’s Variety/Reality Choreography) is one of those categories where it is easier to have multiple winners.
