Animator Stephen Hillenburg has died of ALS at the age of 57.
After having started out in marine biology, Hillenburg enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts to pursue a career in animation. While he was a student there, he made a couple of short films that later led to him receiving his first job at Nickelodeon, which was on the 90’s animated series, Rocko’s Modern Life. In 1999, Hillenburg debuted his very own show titled SpongeBob SquarePants, which has since became one of the longest-running animated series’ in the history of television. In fact, Hillenburg originally intended for the first theatrical film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, to serve as the show’s series finale, but the property was still so successful, that Nickelodeon wasn’t ready for the series to end. So Hillenburg resigned as showrunner to pursue making more short films. Though he did eventually return to the franchise in 2015 with the second theatrical film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.November 28, 2018 at 12:04 am #1202683874
RIP Stephen Hillenburg
This one really hurts. The show he created, Spongebob Squarepants, was one of my defining childhood shows, if not (dare I say it?) THE definitive TV show I grew up. More than any other, Spongebob was the most memorable, most re-watchable, most quotable, and in its brand of humor for me felt like even the most unique television show I had as a little kid.
Thank you Mr. Hillenburg, for all the countless wonderful memories of a fun and hilarious time in Bikini Bottom, and for a show that did more than entertain kids but also proved to be incredibly inspiring in the world of animated TV aimed at younger audiences. Thank you for helping audiences and the industry evolve with your surreal, silly, and at times even surprisingly clever show about an underwater sponge with square pants. You will be deeply missed and loved.
