I hope they fix last year’s mistake and award Foy this year. After all it’s their last chance.
Last year was no mistake, Lancashire is a goddess, and while I would have given it to Foy, they went with the only person in the entire world who would have been a suitable alternative.April 4, 2018 at 7:19 am #1202523992
Joe Cole’s nom for Black Mirror: “Hang the DJ” is laughable.
I get that male leads were scarce this season and Hang the DJ was an evident favorite, but I would have assumed any attention in the category would have defaulted to Jesse Plemons for being already fairly well-known and for being in the most well-known episode that season. Unless Joe Cole has this massive UK visibility yet unknown to me.April 4, 2018 at 8:10 am #1202524022
Some classically BAFTA weird/inconsistent snubs here but overall decent nominations. My thoughts:
-Thrilled to see The Crown land so well. One of them is winning this year. There’s no way it goes home empty handed two years in a row.
-Line of Duty is back! But now every cast member has basically been nominated apart from imo series MVP Martin Compston
-No Car Share in Scripted Comedy or Male Comedy Performance is weird
-Leading Actress is a blood bath. Logic says Claire Foy but logic said her last year. All of the others seem like typical BAFTA winners for this category. We shall see.
-Love the posthumous nomination for Tim Piggot-Smith
-Watched Hang the DJ last week. Joe Cole’s nomination is inspired. Screw the doubters.
-Yay to Anna Maxwell Martin and Sian Gibson in Female Comedy Performance. Shame they’ll lose to Daisy May Cooper. Weird not to see Coel here.
-WTF is that The Vietnam War show in International Series. Documentaries should not be mixed with fiction.
-Supporting Actor always has a weird winner so why not have weird nominees as well. Buchan was robbed.
-Glad to see Hesmondhalgh getting in to represent Broadchurch’s brilliance. Dark horse to win.April 4, 2018 at 10:14 am #1202524094This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.April 4, 2018 at 10:33 am #1202524113
Turns out no one can ever guess Supporting Actor.
Best Actress and Supporting Actress are both cracking line ups. Love The Crown and Three Girls nods.
Best Actress could be anyone’s.
It could be a la Lancashire, and Claire Foy wins for the second series – but our winners since 2010 here have been in contemporary or gritty or crime dramas, not lavish period dramas.
Thandie Newton has a Film BAFTA for Crash – so could add a TV BAFTA to that, but villains don’t normally win Best Actress.
Sinead Keenan seems kind of the biggest surprise if she were to win – but BAFTA do love a surprise with their TV Awards – though as she is the only actress whose drama isn’t nominated for Series/Mini Series which could go against her.
Molly Windsor is possibly the one to beat. Three Girls has multiple nods. It is hugely popular with the public, yet Windsor is unknown. A very heavy topic. And works best, arguably, with the one episode/tape submission as the drama was only three episodes and her character has shining moments in all three (so there can’t be a bad choice of tape). Georgina Campbell was the last big unknown winner, and Windsor seems to follow her footsteps in my eyes.
Disappointed to see nothing for Doctor Foster, and no Claudia Winkleman in Entertainment Performance is a real shame.
Eastenders missing in Soap & Continuing Drama is not unexpected but hopefully is the kick up the backside the show needs right now to step up.
Comedy is kind of a weird mess. No Peter Kay’s Car Share in Actor or Scripted Comedy? Chewing Gum and Timewasters nommed, but no actors from those shows? No Actor nod for This Country, despite clearly being s voters favourite.

Handmaid’s Tale (Channel 4)
Big Little Lies (Sky Atlantic)
Feud: Bette and Joan (BBC Two)
The Vietnam War (BBC)
Huh. Feud is a bit surprising.
Handmaid/BLL of course have been sweeping up everything in America.
Feud was shown over Christmas here, so prime picking season for BAFTA.
Also, BAFTA don’t go for the sweeping US awards shows. They haven’t nominated Game of Thromes in this category since it started sweeping Emmys; Veep & Modern Family have barely ever had a look in; and Breaking Bad won when it was unavoidable.

Just noticed: this is Claire Foy’s third successive Best Actress nomination, but she is yet to win.
She was nominated for Wolf Hall and series one of The Crown.

Really happy for End of the Fucking World since that seems to have zero chances of making any Emmy impact.
I hope Kirby translates over as well but seems unlikely. Happy that she at least is recognized here.
Very glad Catastrophe/Horgan was not forgotten (although Delaney would have been an excellent nominee as well). Still mad it lost the momentum of that writing nomination at the Emmys from Season 1.
Jimmi Simpson was actually really great in Callister so I am not mad at that either.
What is Line of Duty? Is that airing anywhere in the U.S.?
For domestic users, which among the UK titles are worth seeking out? Are any legally available? What is Three Girls?
Howard’s End is still a big Emmy question mark to me. I currently have it getting in for series and for Atwell but am unsure. Somewhat surprised Atwell missed here.
