I am wondering if Catastrophe can manage to get back into writing. It seems to have a much higher profile this go around than for when it got the nomination in season one and is helped by good timing (and, yes, I know it missed for season 2). Main factor against it would probably be other “high brow, auteur” comedies like Fleabag and Russian Doll getting votes from the same demographic (plus multiple contenders from Veep, Barry and Maisel taking up the majority of the spots).

If Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Barry each submit two episodes (and Barry maintains its quality), it will be too easy for all of them to be nominated, leaving no space for anything else.

The Big Bang Theory could miss a directing nomination only if the finale receives huge backlash, similar to HIMYM.

I don’t think Aidy is making it back in to supporting purely because a certain portion of voters will rally around her in lead instead for Shrill, but I assume neither will ultimately be big enough for her to make it in to either categories.

That’s not what I’m arguing. I’m saying that if voters like her in “Shrill,” they may put her down on the ballot for “SNL” as well, especially with the knowledge that she is a former nominee with another strong show this year.

Voters are absolutely done with The Big Bang Theory. It’s only getting a directing nomination because of the rule but it’s certainly not winning…

Who do you think is getting the last spot? Issa Rae or Phoebe Waller-Bridge? With Star Wars, Killing Eve, and Fleabag on Broadway Waller-Bridge seems to be building quite a buzz. Not to mention that the aired episodes of the second season are a marvel. What made Rae a nominee last year, buzz and acclaim, seems to be lacking this year. (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rachel Brosnahan, Natasha Lyonne, Alison Brie, Pamela Adlon are all locked for me.)

Out of those two, I think it’ll be Rae. She’s already been a nominee and the show will be coming out with a new season around the time of the voting period and HBO will want to keep it in the voters’ minds with promos from May till its release. To be honest, I don’t think Waller-Bridge has that much of a shot of getting near a nom. She only played a droid in a flopped SW movie, she’s dropped Killing Eve, and I don’t know if Amazon will even campaign Fleabag beyond Colman.

Edit: just saw the Gilpin and Lyonne, Tomlin and Janney are definitely getting in before they do. Also forgot about Bell, she’ll probably even take the last spot.

This is definitely the likeliest scenario but I remain hopeful that we can still get one surprising choice along side them, particularly if one of the three frontrunners goes more strategic and only submits one episode (which seems to be an increasing trend as shows get slightly more savvy with submissions).

Are you convinced that Janney is going to miss? Also, I think Kristen Bell fits into that category of buzz and acclaim, and I think we can’t consider Brie a lock when her miss last year was inexplicable.

Why would Allison Janney and Lily Tomlin suddenly get dropped? I see them both getting in quite comfortably.

If lock is used in the literal sense of 100% getting in, I think the only true locks are Louis-Dreyfuss and Brosnahan, and probably Adlon. I’m predicting that Janney and Ellis-Ross are dropped for Brie and Lyonne but there’s no certainty there. I have Tomlin in over Rae because legend status but I’m thinking about swapping.

I think Brosnahan, Dreyfus, Janney and Tomlin are safe to get noms and then there’s 2 slots left. Ross isn’t getting in again, neither s Issa Rae.

Lyonne and Adlon imo. But points could be made for Bell, Brie, Ross, Rae, Kemper and Fonda… that category is quite stacked.

The only reason why they kept Allison Janney last year was that she won an Oscar; see Viola Davis’ trajectory the year after her Oscar win. They are not going to nominate Mom over GLOW or Russian Doll. The latter two along with Grace and Frankie hail from Netflix which will definitely campaign those more than they do for a namecheck nomination for Tomlin. She has lost steam along with Janney and Ellis-Ross.
