The TV academy has updated the rules for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards.

ReplyJanuary 31, 2020 at 11:35 am #1203322133Did they make any changes to prevent networks (ahem ahem HBO) from committing category fraud with Limited/Drama Series?

Directing is limited to two directors. Who Is America? last year submitted more than two.
Hairstyling and Makeup are now divided in Contemporary, Period and Variety instead of Single-Camera, Multi-Camera and Limited Series.
New categories
Outstanding Derivative Interactive Program
Outstanding Interactive Extension of a Linear Program“Contiguous-screen time” is added to the description for supporting categories in limited series.
Reality shows are now paired with Nonfiction in the sound categories.
No change to what defines a limited series:
ReplyCopy URLLimited Series is defined as a program with two (2) or more episodes with a total running time
of at least 150 program minutes that tells a complete, non-recurring story, and does not have
an on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.January 31, 2020 at 11:54 am #1203322181and does not have
an on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasonsThis seems to be a direct response to shows like The Young Pope and Big Little Lies that did end up having subsequent seasons, but the issue with this rule is that these shows never PLAN to have more seasons and only decide to continue after they’ve already submitted for Emmy consideration.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2020 at 2:19 pm #1203322440And no addressing of GENRE FRAUD, where shows that are clearly dramas get placed in Comedy Series categories, either? Because that kind of fraud exists and is even more insidious than category fraud.

Yeah like The Good Place. That finale made me weep like a baby. Should be campaigned in Drama to avoid fraud.

January 31, 2020 at 3:39 pm #1203322637“A performer who plays the same character in more than one series may only enter for one series in the current eligibility year.”
So no more cross-over performances in guest categories like Viola Davis for Scandal.
“If the series/limited series has one or more episodes that air after May 31 and those episodes/parts are not able to be posted by that date on Academy website, then the complete series/limited series, along with the individual achievements, will be eligible in the subsequent eligibility year.”
This seems overly strict at first but I’m sure it won’t be too hard for networks to post them on Academy website-how many episode there might be- to make them eligible. At least no more dividing the seasons into two Emmy cycles, phew.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2020 at 4:07 pm #1203322669I see a few notable changes beyond what I found a month ago:
Other changes, not necessarily in that link and sometimes seemingly directly in response to a specific nomination:
– You cannot get nominated for crossovers if you are also submitting for your main series, e.g. Viola Davis on Scandal
– You cannot submit more than two directors on a single episode, e.g. Who is America?
– One of the half-hour sound mixing nominees must be multi-camera now, like in comedy directing
– The song category is now a popular vote, following the other music categories last year, so no more The Good Fight; This is Us will be able to campaign for whatever Mandy Moore song they come up with this year
– Makeup and hair are now split between contemporary and period as opposed to series and limited, following the lead of costumes and production design (and you cannot submit for both contemporary and period, as you can at the makeup guild)
– The short form maximum has been increased from fifteen to seventeen minutes
– Supporting visual effects eligibility has been tightened
– A bunch of interactive and reality categories have been renamed1. Children’s Program nominating is now open only to the animation and children’s branches as opposed to all branches. My guess is that this is the result of lobbying from Nickelodeon, which was snubbed the last two years after being nominated every year since 1995. Half of the nominees the last two years have been from Netflix, so I bet that Nickelodeon is thinking that Netflix is benefiting too much from visibility.

2. The proportional nomination rules do not apply if there are fewer than three submissions from one track. Blame the Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes category. Good Omens was the only movie or limited series to submit last year, so it got its nomination by default. Two years ago, Black Mirror and Fahrenheit 451 were the only movies or limited series to submit.
3. Eligibility in the nonfiction and reality categories is much less of a free-for-all now. If Lip Sync Battle returns, I expect it to be forced into Competition instead of Structured Reality. Shark Tank might be similarly forced. It looks like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Somebody Feed Phil and United Shades of America will be shuffled to Hosted Nonfiction.January 31, 2020 at 4:31 pm #1203322697Seeming Luther will no longer compete in the Limited Series category, could Elba get in to Drama Actor?
ReplyCopy URLFYC OSCARS : PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN IN ALL CATEGORIES (ESP. ACTRESS – Carey Mulligan AND ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY — EMERALD FENNELL), VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", ESSIE DAVIS FOR "BABYTEETH"
January 31, 2020 at 4:34 pm #1203322701Drama Actor seems pretty full right now, so I wouldn’t bet on it.

We’ll call this one “The Handmaid’s Tale Rule” lol. Something should be done about the mess they pulled last cycle.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 1, 2020 at 11:35 am #1203323827I hope they expand limited series to seven/eight nominees soon, because there are too many phenomenal limited and anthology series out there to limit them lower than the drama and comedy series categories.
