Nominated 2019 (lead actress in drama)

What actors could routinely get nominated but never win for their current respective shows? This list doesn’t include wins for directing, writing, producing, guest acting, movie mini categories or other shows that they won for different characters. How many of these nominees should have won? Do you think any of these nominees have any chance to win on their next nomination, whether it is this year or sometime in the near future? — Larry David, Anthony Anderson, William H. Macy, Lily Tomlin, Mandy Patinkin, Lena Headey, Don Cheadle, Bob Odenkirk, Robin Wright, Anna Chlumsky, Jonathan Banks, Michael Kelly, Emilia Clarke. I have included supporting or lead nominations to actors who got in to both categories so I combined them into one overall nomination, however this applies to people who never won and got at least 4 combined nominations.

Some of these really hurt. Especially Steve Carrel and Jason Alexander.

I believe Odenkirk and Banks will eventually win. It’ll break my heart if they don’t. Odenkirk should’ve won for season 3 and Banks should’ve won for season 1.

Great list! It looks to me like many of these actors, particularly those in the comedy races, likely suffered from the lack of likability of their characters, but then some characters, like many of those in the drama categories, weren’t exciting enough to get voters’ attention. So the best Emmy bait would be over-the-top characters with something redeeming about them, although the latter has seemed less important in recent years as “anti-heros” become more of the norm. Generally, most of the perennial nominees lessen their chances of winning over time, but all it takes is a great storyline to get them back into the mix, so I wouldn’t rule anyone out entirely.

Angela Lansbury hurts. She deserves an Emmy somewhere in the “Murder She Wrote” run.

I’d also pick Barbara Bosson (and Stanley Tucci for supporting actor) as winners in 1996 for “Murder One.” An amazing series (the first season, anyway) that still holds up great today.
